Maui vs. the Big Island

i recently posted this question for our september honeymoon. i had mentioned in the post that we wanted to see a volcano so all of the answers pointed to the big island. having read more about it, i'm not so sure a trip to the volcano is worth it since the drive is long and the lava is far off in the distance. does anyone have an opinion on this? and, if the active volcano wasn't an issue, would you recommend maui or the big island for a honeymoon?

This argument has been going on for years on this forum... everyone has their favorite islands and it seems they will fight to the death to influence you... that said...

Maui has much more action in a tighter area than the BI... it is much more touristy and I would think better for a couple on their honeymoon... The BI has advantages for nature lovers and less vacationy attractions....

I would recommend Maui with a side trip to the BI, especially if you want volcano action... these side trips are reasonably priced, include airfare, and return you back to Maui the same day... you can also take the BI circle tour which stops at several points in BI and includes the Volcano tour... good luck!

There is lots to do in Maui - I would stay there and save BI for another visit. Congrats and have fun!

Go to Maui.
I loved the Big Island (we just went on Spring Break) We saw the volcano. It is miles of rock. I guess for some it is awesome. It was cool to see, but I would never drive three hours from my resort to see it again. Nor, would I recommend it for a honeymoon.
That is just my opinion.
I loved the Hilton that we stayed at. It was a large resort and catered to families. It had everything. I thought the Big Island had the best snorkeling I have ever experienced. It was especially cool to see so many turtles.
For a honeymoon, I would recommend Maui. I haven't been there in 13 years, but we are talking about going back. It is pretty and has nice resorts. It would be a wonderful place to go on a honeymoon.

I couldn't disagree with girlonthego more. Hilton on the BI is a joke (locals call it the Disney hotel for a reason). And while the volcano is a bit of a drive, how often do get the opportunity to watch an active volcano in person? Regardless, don't fret cause you'll have a good time no matter which island you go to and what you see and do. Enjoy!
