Maui or Big Island?

We've been to both - on two separate trips. I'd say it depends on your personality. If you like a lot of diversity, adventure, volcanoes, etc. then hit the Big Island. If you like something more posh and sophisticated with a lot of fine dining, etc. then Maui. We loved both, but they felt like completely different experiences; you could have a great time on either one.

Maui mo'bettah!
Maui may not have an active volcano, but Maui is every bit as diverse as the BI.
I think the beaches on Maui are far superior to those on the BI.
I have not been snorkeling at the BI in many years, but many say that the snorkeling is better on the BI.
There are some spectacular restaurants on Maui offering everything from classic french to seafood.
