I made reservations at Yellowstone for early July this morning. It was difficult because we have six people (ourselves, our kids and my mother.) I could not get four consecutive days. However, they did book me into two nights at the Western cabins at Lake Yellowstone. Has anyone stayed there? I'm fairly worried about our ability to put six people in one cabin, even though my youngest won't mind sleeping on the floor. Any experience with this?

I have not seen the inside of these cabins but if they are the yellow cabins near Lake Yellowstone Lodge, didn't look bad. However, I don't remember reading anything GOOD about them on this board. In the above space where it says "search this forum" type in Lake Yellowstone Cabins and it will pull up a long list for you to read thru. I just now read half-way thru all the posts and found, from people who have stayed there, OK to awful. When we went to Yellowstone I called often and did get what I wanted as people do cancel. While we were at Old Faithful Inn, we went thru one of their suites, it had rustic charm and two rooms that would accomodate your family.

At Yellowstone, the cabins associated with the Old Faithful Snow Lodge cabins are tolerable. They hold at best 4 people and the bathrooms are very small. They are siutated in a virtually barren, almost treeless setting of great ugliness.

The Western style cabins with 2 double beds that rent for about $121 per night are acceptable.

I think the term "tolerable or less" applies to virtually all other accommodations in Yellowstone, except some of the hotel rooms/suites that go for better than $130 per night.

Some of the cabins can best be described as "rough".

I stayed in these cabins on one trip to Yellowstone. I remember it as a fairly comical experience. The only sink was not in the bathroom as one would think, but in the bedroom right as you walked into the cabin. The bedspreads were a strange brown and looked dirty even though the weren't. I don't look for anything fancy in hotel rooms and certainly not in a cabin, but there's no way I would stay in one of these cabins again. The only positive thing I have to say about the cabins is that we did not see the bear that we were warned was roaming through the cabins during our stay. : )

We stayed at one of these cabins in September. It got very cold at night and the heater in the cabin was barely adequate, especially since there was not heat in the bathroom. 6 people would be very crowded. There are 2 double beds. I don't know if they have roll-aways available. If not, you'll have to find 2 people willing to sleep on the floor, which doesn't have plush carpet. Make sure you take sleeping bags. The cabin was clean, but very spartan. The bathroom is tiny and the sink in the cabin we stayed in was in the bedroom. As I'm sure you have already read, lodging in the national parks is often not very good quality for the price. However, if you want to stay in the park there aren't a lot of choices. I don't know if the more expensive lodge rooms are better. I hate paying more than I absolutely have to for a place to sleep.

Thanks for the feedback. I think everyone has confirmed my concerns. I guess I will have to continue to call each week to see if there is a cancellation to a better location.

The Xanterra website says that rooms with a larger capacity than 4 are available, but you have to call. They are not available on-line.

I know that two room units are available at Old Faithful Inn, and if each room will hold 4 people, hopefully one of them will become available.

The first time I went to Yellowstone, we stayed in a cabin with no facilities.
The heat was a stove. It got so cold that we were all shivering under the covers. My dad got up about 2 AM and built a fire in the stove.
It was not a good visit.
