Correction: that was a "fried sweet potato chip" on my Peruvian roast pork sandwich, not a "friend"

Great start! I hope you liked Grato. It's noisy but their food is really good. If you are in the area long enough, you must try the Chef Conleys main restaurant, Buccan, just over the bridge in Palm Beach. We like that so much we go once a week when we are in Florida, and we live about 25 minutes away. One of the chefs there also told me about a good Thai restaurant in WPB called Malakor Thai.

Good luck with the hunt..I am enjoying reading aloong..

We ate at a really good Thai restaurant in WPB a few years ago. Looking at the pictures, it wasn't Malakor Thai. I'll have to figure out what it was!

So on to dinner at Grato, an Italian restaurant owned by the same folks who run Buccan on Palm Beach. Interior: a large, high space, full of happy people, medium noisy but in a good way when diners are chatting and laughing and enjoying themselves. Myself: the first draft beer an outstanding ale (Matthews, local) and the second an outstanding IPA, also local. Partner: two very fine lemon drop martinis. Dinner: one sizable small plate to share - grilled octopus on a bed of grain or pasta (farro? I forget) with many different chopped herbs which cycled different tastes as one nibbled away. Grade A+++. Then two entrees: mine was veal shoulder simmered in marsala over pappardelle topped with shaved truffles. Judgment: it could have been more outstanding, no discernible taste of truffles. Harrumph. Grade: B. Partner: small sweet scallops seared quickly then mixed with lardons and grilled brussel sprouts on a bed of sweet potato puree. Grade: A+ The endings: Courvoisier for me (they had no Remy, this is a slight faililng IMHO) and a trio of excellent gelato flavors for partner. The "coup de bambou" - a reasonable $147.

Sunday morning: me, up at 7:30, walked the dogs, put them back in bed, walked out to the pool and received a mug of good coffee from one of the gracious owners. Slowly partner emerges and we enjoy fruit, cereal, and eggs benedict as the sun rises higher. I am so content that I am revising my search for habitation in West Palm. The new plan is to buy one half of this wonderful B&B and turn it into our personal condo. Just kidding.

Then out for a walk with the dogs around Howard Park, a big green space bordering Lake Avenue where the B&B is located. Not only is the dog park, City Paws, located here as well as the ball field, but the Armory Art Center is here. This is a recycled large armory, now a space for art classes, studios, and exhibitions. There are two or three buildings in this complex, in a very cool Florida Art Deco style. And all around these sites are big mature trees and walkways, lots of people walking their dogs, lots of doggy relief baggy stations and trash cans. The park is incredibly neat and clean.

Over to explore the Grandview Public Market, which is just one block beyond the far side of Howard Park, an easy 10 minute walk.. This is a big empty warehouse, now transformed into a meeting-greeting-eating space with different cafes, snack bars, food niches, and an indoor/outdoor cocktail bar, with the big roofed open outdoor space a dog-welcoming venue. We shall return here at 5 pm for drinks with old Key West friends who just moved here last year after selling their KW house. They are sort of our role models and we shall download information from them. Peter and Rick, our B&B hosts, have also been very helpful with ideas for our project.

Stay tuned........

I'm almost certain the Thai restaurant to which I referred above is Thaicoon. Really very good - went twice.

Sunday afternoon, more neighborhood exploration, more realtor time looking at houses for sale and for rent. Walked to northern end of Grandview, up Florida Avenue to the pedestrian-bike path linking this neighborhood to the city center. Found a nice 3 BR 2 BA newly renovated 1920s house for sale or also for rent, we'll think about this--of course this particular house will not be on the market come April or May when we will probably be about to make our move. But it gave us something concrete to latch onto and think about.

Then: nap, take dogs to the dog park. Wash up and go over to Grandview Public Market for dinner. House music thumping throughout the place. Many many people, from 5-year-olds, to twentysomethings, to Moms and Dads, to grand parents, to retired snowbirds of a Certain Age (that would be us). Everyone having a great time. "Dinner" is perhaps too formal a word for our evening meal here. We noshed around several foodstands in this very cool rehabbed warehouse space. Herewith the results: from Zipitio's, carne asada tacos. Grade: A+++, almost Mexico City quality. Then a bahn mi from Ramen Lab. Grade: again, A+++, would rival Ho Chi Minh City I would guess. Then a margherita pizza loaded with fresh arugula from Pizza Paradise. Grade: B+. Good, not stunningly great. Beers: one pale ale, one IPA, two chocolate stouts, all extreeeemly fine. Total evening dining experience bill: about $75. Makes one do a pro and con about spending mucho at a chef-led restaurant versus a street food venue like Grandview Public Market. Why not do both?

About to pull away from WPB tomorrow morning to go to Key West. Our visit has been very productive I think. It has given us a ton of information and we have cycled through so many scenarios, but at the moment we have settled down to thinking we will rent a place for a year in the Grandview neighborhood or thereabouts, get our feet on the ground, get to know the city better, and then decide whether to continue renting or to buy something.

Final [tentative] judgment: Viva WPB!!

Renting for a year before buying is a great decision. Sounds like you really enjoyed the area.

Check out condos in South Palm
beach. The A1A strip just north of Lake worth bridge. There are a lot of condos for sale in the area. Beaches are waking distance and on the safest sections of town which is east side of the bridge!
