The party area of Austin is on 6th St.
If you like antiquing, Fredericksburg is the best in the area.
If you like outlet malls, San Marcos (between Austin and S.A.) has a large one.
If you like waterparks, the best in the world is in New Braunfels --Schlitterbahn. It's been featured on the travel channel.
Tubing on the Guadalupe River is great fun. I suggest you go up to Gruene, just north of N.B. and use the Rockin R company.
While there, you would probably enjoy walking around Gruene. It's a small little town that has been revised with some nice B&B's, shops and the Grist Mill Restaurant (which I strongly suggest).
If you like history the Lyndon Johnson's presidential library is on the UT campus.
Great food at County Line and El Mat's.
I know the locals could give you a lot more ideas. This topic needed to come back to the top.

Valerie,
I would spend Saturday in San Antonio if you already have plans to eat there Sat. night. By the way, where did you choose to eat?
Anyway, go to the Riverwalk, the Alamo, etc. if you're a first time visitor to the area. These places are all downtown, which makes seeing a lot in a short time, easier.
If you've been to San Antonio before, I agree with another poster who mentioned Gruene. You can stop there on your way from Austin to S.A.- it's just NW of New Braunfels. Fredericksberg might be a little ambitious- unless you want to spend a lot of time driving- it's about 2.5 hours to downtown San Antonio- and an hour at least from Austin.
Have a great time!

I live in Austin... Need to know what kind of things the 4 of you enjoy? How long will you be in the Austin/SA area?
(By the way, Matt's El Rauncho is my least favorit restaurant in Austin. However, the County Line is very popular for BBQ. Give me some ideas on your food preferences as well. Will give you some ideas.)

It depends on what you like. Personally, I'd stay away from 6th Street unless you are in your early to mids 20s, it's like a young Bourbon street.
We enjoyed going to the funky shops on S. Congress in South Austin. The botanical gardens were a relaxing way to enjoy some of the day, we stopped at Barton Springs afterwards
There is also the Lady Bird Johnson Wildlife center.
Make sure to go see some good music while you are there!

Valerie - when you say what to do Sat morning and Sunday morning... Are those the only times you'll be in Austin?
In any event, Sat. Morning you could have breakfast at one of the Kerbey Lane restaurants or Magnolia Cafe (2 of those also!) or Guerros. Get there early and beat the crowds.
Then go to the capital, or Barton Springs (brrrr, cold water), or take a drive out toward the lake (Travis). Shopping on South Congress is a great idea as well.
And, for whatever you can't do Sat. AM, do that Sunday AM.
If you are back in Austin Sat. PM, I too would avoid 6th St., unless you are of the partying 20 - something set. West 4th St. (Warehouse District) is a little more upscale and older. (restaurants, tapas bars, Irish pubs) If you are coming before mid-August, you are in luck. Most of the 50,000 UT students are away.
If you want to check out a honky tonk, try the Broken Spoke on South Lamar.

Couple recommendations from a local....
Austin
Mexican - Gueros or Curras
BBQ - Salt Lick (its byob)
Fancy - Jeffreys
Sunday morning brunch - Fonda San Miguel
Sandwiches - Schlotskys
San Antonio
Tex-Mex - Pico de Gallo, Mi Tierra
BBQ - County Line on the Riverwalk
Day trips
Wimberely or Fredricksburg if you like antiques and shopping (both are equally nice, Wimberely is closer)
Have a nice time and be sure to enjoy the best thing we have to offer which is the nicest people you'll ever meet!
