Congratulations!

Actually - I definitely recommend the Top of the Rock over the Empire State Bldg. You son won't give a flying fig about the view of the Chrysler Bldg. The Top of the Rock has just as good views over all of New York -- and has the benefit of costing a lot less and having MUCH shorter lines to go up.

And Top of the Rock has a great view of the Empire State Building.

Doug, I'm not exactly sure yet how I'll be getting to Rochester from buffalo. I believe it would be best to pick up a car at the airport when we arrive on Saturday morning. Also will most likely be most comfortable in a hotel while we are there too. That will give us the freedom to come and go and rest when we need to. Thank you for keeping me from sitting idle. It has been such a relief to secure the return flight tickets... But I'm sure it will be here before I know it... And there are still plenty of loose ends to get tied up.i really appreciate your time and attention... And gentle nudges.

I've always been the one that tagged along while everyone else made ALL the arrangements since I was the kid... It's quite an experience being the one to make sure it all gets done. Almost like I'm ALL grown up.... At 42, i guess it's time.

Another side note... When I was 12 and my daddy drove us up from Georgia with my 2 sisters and my step sister on our summer vacation visiting him... He died on the trip.... My mom ended up having to fly in from Arizona and drive us minors back down to Georgia...Finding all those memories coming up to the surface. Don't want them to cloud our time there, but already finding it difficult to keep under wraps.

It's a shame you didn't price the car rental before booking the flights out of Rochester. I don't know what the drop-off charges will be to rent from Buffalo and drop off in Rochester. I'm not saying it's not a viable plan (90 minutes to the airport isn't bad), but it may erase any savings you got from the cheaper flights.

2. Don't recall how to get to hotel in Manhattan??? From JFK
3. At hotel, Madison and 45th... How to get to staten island ferry?
4. I know once on Staten island ferry, we have to exit, then re- enter to get back TO Manhattan.
5. Once in Manhattan then back to Madison and 45th...

6. SATURDAY 7/22 meet private car at Madison and 45th prearranged at 4am to JFK TERMINAL 5

7. BUFFALO arrival???? 9 hours until reunion.
(Transportation and lodging)

8. Sunday ???? Transportation and lodging (recover from reunion fun and spirits)

9. Monday ???? Transportation and lodging(niagara falls)

10. Tuesday ???? Transportation and lodging... (Should make our way to Rochester for early flight out)

Ok and the rest I can do on my own...i think... We have a layover in Chicago
Less than an hour... Hopefully that will be enough time to catch the connection. Or they wouldn't sell it like that, right?

Now, it's helped to see where the grey parts are and see about making the most of family time in buffalo... My dad was the only boy. He has 4 sisters... He was the 1st to die...All of them have died since, except for 1... Which is the main reason for the trip... Like my sister says... Don't know if this will be our last chance to visit with her...

I'm so glad there's a place to sort through all this and not by myself. Can't thank you ALL enough.... Now... Do I call the doctor and get some don't cry pills??? Or let it flow like niagra? Don't worry... Not a real question...i don't think?

Forgot about the old fashioned telephone... Well, should I say the old fashioned new smart cell phone telephone...

Why are you going from EWR to JFK? From EWR you should go directly to the Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan. There is no reason to go to JFK.

The Roosevelt Hotel is very close to Grand Central Terminal. From EWR you can take an Airporter Bus to a stop near Grand Central Terminal and then walk a few blocks to the hotel. This is about as direct and fast a trip as you can get and will cost about $15 per person. A private car/ taxi would be the only easier method, but would cost $70 or more.

(Do NOT take a SuperShuttle because you will be stuck in the shuttle driving all over Manhattan dropping off other travelers before getting near your hotel.)

At Grand Central Terminal, you can take the subway (4 or 5 train) downtown to the Bowling Green stop, which puts you a short walk along the edge of Battery Park to South Ferry and the Staten Island Ferry Terminal. Read carefully the white service change signs posted in the subway station--sometimes on weekends or other hours the 4 or 5 might not make the same stops because of construction.

You can reverse the process to return to your hotel, or for another adventure, take a different subway uptown. Right at the SI Ferry Terminal is another subway station (South Ferry/Whitehall Street). From there, you can take the 1, R, or W train uptown--all three of these trains go to Times Square, so you can travel uptown, explore Times Square and walk east across town a few blocks to your hotel.

Do you have a smart phone? If so, get familiar with the maps app, it will answer your "how to get to" questions. Failing that, use maps.google.com on a computer.

Thank you Ellen.i was saying that because back in the post Thursdaysd had said to take the shuttle from EWR to JFK (may 16)... Ok I do see an airport bus that runs to grand central from EWR for$16. I think grand central station will be another great experience to see how people travel on the other side of this country... We have spent most of my son's life in a small town and he has experienced public transportation there... It will be quite a shock to see the fast movements that are depicted in movies at grand central.

Wondering how early the hotel will allow us to check in.i did add it as a special request when booking to allow an early check in.

And yes Thursdaysd I do have a smart phone and have already been looking into and asking the how to get to questions on it... That's kinda what brought me to this site... That's what I'm doing here.

I've also been on Google earth and have been exploring the area from a birds eyes as well as ground level. Have been able to pinpoint landmarks on my own the more I use it and take screen shots and show my son and boyfriend.

The maps you are talking about are perfect for sceneries when you have a car...i constantly use them to calculate my eta when traveling locally... Not very useful when visiting " the big city" again, the reason why I'm asking people who know what they know so I can get to where we're going using the best avenues... What I've found on the how to get to websites are that they are junked up with so many competitors there to sway me in their directions that it gets so frustrating and is not an adequate substitute for a real live person.

Enough for now... Thank you everybody.

Oh yeah...i remember now... It's because I was planning on staying at a hotel close by that airport so that we wound be close to it for our flight out early the next day...i had a change of plans when choosing my hotel, I was shown the Roosevelt hotel as a favorite recommended by the website prior to filtering for distance... When I saw that hotel and realized the possibilities of what we could do if we stayed right smack in the middle of all the action as opposed to just waiting at an airport hotel for our flight...i milled it over in my head. What made me decide is a friend who told me NO!!! absolutely do NOT stay in Jamaica... And I told him I didn't like the ideas of queens or Brooklyn either and the Roosevelt hotel was comparable in price as the other hotels by JFK. that's what made me change my plans. But forgot to change my route as well.

Yes, I told you to take the airport shuttle to JFK when you were proposing to stay in an airport hotel, NOT if you were staying in Manhattan, lol.

Early check in is unpredictable. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't. Plan for both.

The smart phone maps apps I am talking about are perfect for big cities. They understand bus and metro systems, can show you exactly where to find the bus stop, tell you when the bus will arrive and how much it will cost if you don't have a pass, let you follow the route in real time, and show you where to get off. You need to click on the bus icon.... For some reason they don't understand ferries, but otherwise they make tackling a big city much, much easier. Hopstop used to do the same thing, but was taken over and closed down by Apple. (Note: I use a google maps app on an Android phone, have no idea how this works on an iPhone, but google maps are still better than Apple maps on my iPad.)

That said, the best source for info on transport to/from an airport is almost always the airport's own website.

Great and I didn't even think about the bus optionon Google maps. Yes I have android too.Sorry,i misunderstood what you were saying,i think. And I will check out the airport website. Don't know why I didn't think about that. I've got messages into my family on trying to pin down some places to stay in buffalo and also one to my cousin in Rochester for a night stay and a ride to the airport. Still working on transportation to Rochester.

Will probably need a vacation from my vacation when it's all done but glad to be able to create some memories for my son.

I've visited the Botanical Gardens in Brooklyn. Very nice. I also recommend the Brooklyn Museum next door, and walking back to Manhattan across the Brooklyn bridge.

See: https://mytimetotravel.wordpress.com...e-in-new-york/

There are trains from Buffalo to Rochester. Mostly from Depew (BUF), and a few from Exchange Street (BFX). I am not familiar with Buffalo so don't know whether they are useful locations.

For the AirTrain:
= after your flight and baggage claim, make your way from the airline terminal to the AirTrain stop
= ride the AirTrain to the airport railroad station for New Jersey transit
= pay for AirTrain; buy NJ Transit ticket (or buy it online)
= change levels for departing platform
= ride NJ Transit to New York Penn Station
= find your way out of Penn Station, which will probably involve dragging your luggage and child up one or more flights of stairs.
= To get to your hotel: take a taxi; OR take a subway one stop and switch to another subway another stop (many more stairs); OR take the M32 bus on 32nd St to 44th St and Madison; OR walk 1.2 miles (25 minutes) from Penn Station to hotel

For the Newark Airport Express Bus:
= Buy your ticket online
= after your flight and baggage claim, make your way from the airline terminal to the Newark Airport Express Bus stop in front
= store your luggage underneath the bus and ride the bus to Manhattan
= get off the bus at Grand Central Station (41st Street between Park & Lexington Avenues) and retrieve your luggage
= walk .3 mile (7 minutes) to your hotel

Since you are staying less than 24 hours, you do not have the time to make the trips to either of the botanical gardens. It takes time just to travel them.
