Jet blue has alot of early morning departures, so the security lines are busy but not horribly busy. If your flight is at 6 am (and it's domestic), when you leave depends on if you are checking bags. If you need to check bags, then you need to leave the Roosevelt Hotel no later than 4 am. It will take less than 30 minutes to get to JFK at that hour.
If you don't have to check bags, I think you'd be safe leaving at 4:30 am as long as you are going by car service and have booked it already, though to be safe have your pick-up scheduled at 4:15 am.
Just keep in mind that leaving at 4:30 am means you have no room for error or diversion. You have to go straight through security to your gate, and I'm assuming you have already checked in the night before. If none of that is possible, then leave at 4 am.
But public transit is not an option at that time of the morning. You have to take a car service and book it ahead of time. It will cost about $70 all-in (including tax, tip, and tolls).

Thank you Doug!!! That's exactly what I needed to know. I'm so glad you didn't write..."you're staying in Manhattan? Are you out of your mind?" I think we'll leave at 4... So exciting.

Cave of the Winds is accessed by elevator. But, lines can be long, and they close early if lines are long. We arrived by 7:00 pm just before they closed. The posted closing time on the web is 10:00. They give sandals and poncho and a bag to carry your shoes. If you want to get wet, get on the hurricane platform once down there.

I'd get the cheapest, fastest connection from Buffalo to Phoenix. There won't be a nonstop flight, so just get what works best for you, and avoid connections that require you to go from JFK to LGA or vice versa since that adds unnecessary cost and time.
Several airlines serve Buffalo, so you have options. Check Southwest, which might have a simple one-stop connection to Phoenix. Alternatively, you could fly out of Toronto, but you'd have the added issue of getting to Toronto, adding both expense and time.

As well as needing a passport. Yeah, I've been keeping an eye on the fares. Looks like$250 each is as cheap as it's going to get. Keep on waiting for them to go down, but I better get to it before they go up.

Flights from Buffalo, which are limited, aren't likely to get any cheaper. At 8 weeks out, this is the sweet spot for finding a summer airfare, and Buffalo is a popular summer destination because of Niagara Falls.

You're right. I've been checking on the flights...i get paid tomorrow and so I will buy the tickets then. It has been easier to handle to buy the tickets this way. I guess the days of the$59 flights are gone. Just fortunate to be able to make the trip this time. Thank you to everyone that took the time to help me. Too bad this site doesn't allow pictures because I would definitely post some. Maybe before it's all said and done I can make a spot on YouTube if anyone is interested.

Ok! Will do. And I'll try to keep this post active. May need help once we're there. Was hoping to wake up to some airfare wars. My son constantly says"i can't waitli cant watt!" Neither can I. Have seen something about top of the rock. Does anybody know something about that? Also was going to check out the empire state building. Is central park worth the time?

I have been to Top of the Rock and Empire State. I prefer Empire State Building because I love its view of Chrysler Building (my favorite building). The benefit of Top of the Rock is that it is by Rockefeller Center and St. Patrick's Cathedral.
Also, Met Museum of Art entrance is by suggested donation. Don't be put off that it is a museum. It is in the choicest part of Central Park and has an Egyptian Temple inside, magnificent art from Africa and the Pacific.
For reasonable food, Grey's Papaya on the Upper West Side is very good. Hot dogs and juice. But, what 10 year old does not like hot dogs and juice.
