I'm the one taking the pictures, Neo

My dad was always the family photographer (he was a Naval photographer in Korea before he went to college and law school) and we had very few pictures of him. When he was no longer able to take pictures, no one wanted to take over the photo duties because (I guess) that would have been admitting he was finished with the camera. At some point I became the designated photographer (with no skills whatsoever, I might add), the tour guide, and chief family organizer. Someday my kids will look at all our photos and remember me by my absence the way I do my Dad... I hope.

Nice report! Wow! I would not have believed anyone could survive a "party of 11" vacation. Sounds like you pulled it off smoothly - maybe it just takes a really good planner.

Thank you, Bardo However, for obvious reasons I am Holding Back on some of the, er, problem bits. I can safely say that really the only vacation suitable to such as large group is either a cruise or a resort destination, where everyone gathers for one shared meal daily and goes off to pursue their own fun otherwise.

kswl, how I can so relate to your unstated problems with family group dynamics. It's hard enough with only 2 people, let alone a whole herd, lol!

We have recently returned from a week's vacation to Florida with our adult children and their spouse and boyfriend. Hadn't had a real family trip in years.

I remember when we were planning it. DH wanted to rent a large house for everyone to stay in together. RED FLAG ALERT!! No way was I going to do that. We ended up with 3 separate hotel rooms, did a few things together each day but mainly had dinners.

Just yesterday, my mother started talking about my putting together a trip for the whole family (that would be about 20). Although I am not a cruise person, I'm thinking this might be a good idea. Or Hawaii.

Anyway, I really enjoyed your report. I haven't been to New York in ages, and now I think it's time to go back. Being there at Christmas seems magical.

Happy New Year to you!

I'm with you, Swisshiker. It's amazing how many people think that going on a vacation with 20 people is a good idea! NOT!

Summer before last we took 17 on an Alaskan cruise. We met three times for meals during 7 days and had one day-long shore excursion together. Otherwise, everyone was on their own and that worked out well.

One of my friends and her family rent adjoining beach condos in FL every year. Each family unit has a separate condominium where they can get away from each other. In my opinion that is essential; otherwise you end the trip by calling lawyers and drawing up codicils, lol.

I am not a cruise person either but it does seem like a good way to go with a large group - break out during the day to "do" your own things and then re-group at night ... too bad my daughter watched Posiden <sp> at a friend's house - at the age of 10 she constantly tells us she will never go on a cruise!

Dh asked her to go whale watching the other day and she freaked. LOL

Dawn, the poor child's been marked for life, lol.

Actually, when we went to Alaska for DH's parents' 50th anniversary, all the grandchildren went except ours. The youngest wanted to go to camp as usual, our daughter had a summer job, and the eldest was making up a class that summer. DH and I had the best time of anyone---sleeping late, most shore excursions, nice restaurants on the ship...

Hats off to you for your organizational skills. I couldn't organize our way out of a paper bag if there are more than 4 of us involved!

We were in NYC in early Dec and what great memories you raised. I think I was smiling for the whole time we were there.

Great pix too.

What a wonderful report. IT sounds like you had a truly wonderful trip. Christmas is so magical.
I was there 2 years ago on my own. My first Christmas on my own and I chose New York. Fabulous!!! I loved Radio City Music Hall and looking at all the store windows.

I'm so glad you had a great trip.
Thanks for posting such a great report.

Fantastic report. I can't believe you went to Mars2000! Now that's gotta hurt a bit - glad the blue drinks took the edge off!!!

I too missed the Rockettes Santa outfits, although the crystal bedazzled! Still, nothing like that 36 SantaMamas all decked out in red and white. I think they shoudl do both costumes - the bejewelled and the SantaBaby! I also wasn't impressed with the costume change for 12 days of Christmas (speaking from a touring show perspective, which had fabulous yellow pushup gettups.)

Again, thank you for a wonderful report! You did NYC big and bold and as a former newyorker, I really respect that you weren't afraid to be the ultimate tourist!

Happy New Year!
