I was one of the first posters since I love the "poison" threads. I turn my head and suddenly we're in the 30's.

Had an SOS from my niece, the freshman in college. First laptop, first time with high speed internet. Has it less than 30 days and gets a virus.

Dang, girl! Put a condom on that thing.

Nice hearing everyone's stories about NO. Well, at least the stories that are remembered!

I went with my husband to a business meeting in New Orleans in 1998 as Hurricane Georges was developing in the Gulf. Told my DH I didn't want to go but he said don't be silly, it won't hit NO - it's headin for Florida. We had a great dinner our first night at Chef Paul P. (sp?). The next day was beautiful with a georgous sunny sky. There was a lack of people walking around shopping but that was ok with me. Then we noticed that shops and hotels were boarding up windows. Uhhhh, better go back to the hotel and check the weather. Shock shock Georges was heading for NO.

We took a 1 hour taxi ride to the airport in heavy traffic to rent a car to get out of town. There was a tv crew coming in requesting SUV's. Everyone was heckeling them saying - get them outta here! Since the traffic was so heavy on the one road out of NO (I10) we decided to set our alarm for 2 a.m. and leave then hoping it would thin out. We offered to give others a ride from my husband's company who were staying at the same hotel but they were determined to ride it out at the hotel (big mistake). If it got too bad they would go to the SUPERDOME (OMG).

The drive out of NO was something I will never forget. Very surreal. The freeway overpass lights cast a bluish light on everything. People were leaving town in cars that shouldn't have been driven across the street. Cars would breakdown and people would just leave them on the side of the road and get in another car with friends. People would get sleepy and just pull off and sleep for awhile.

We made it to the Baton Rouge airport and managed to get on a prop plane out of there. I was never so glad to take off. The people who stayed were sorry - No electricity, couldn't get out for a few days as the airport was closed but did have good food.

Well, I was born in the later part of the 60's (way later part), so I guess your grandfather didn't cook for my parents on their honeymoon, Scarlett.

Maybe Court of Two Sisters will come back with a bang like the rest of NOLA, and I can give it a try then.

Scarlett, what part of Metairie, if you don't mind me askin'?
I spent childhood summers bumming around the levee off Live Oak and Poinsietta (can't spell...too much sweet Bonny Doon by this time of night). Pops was born and raised NOLA...250 years worth of family history there.
Two Sisters...one of Pops party haunts with the cousins way back "in the day". They're in their 70's now but at least their all together again and safe in TN until NOLA does her impression of a phoenix.

So...let's raise glasses and give out a heartfelt "CHEERS" to the soon to be hatched new aviary species to be known as the NOLA PHOENIX...!!

(gulp...hum...think I should switch to water for the rest of the night...)

Statia you ((&))

It's not easy getting older. All you can do is accuse others of being young.

You've got a point, Indy.
Too bad the Bonny Doon bottle is empty now.

Hey!
What's THAT?
Oooh my...it's some Cambria Pinot Noir!

WhoHoo! I'm off to get a corkscrew! Life is good again.

I feel lucky to have had two quite long visits in NO, first with my best friend who was born and grew up there and then with my husband when he was attending a conference. That's one of my favourite kinds of trips -- I get to 'tourist' around all day while he's at sessions and then take him back to the best places in the evenings.

Best memories? Coffee and beignet at Cafe du Monde; New Years Eve in Jackson Square; watching the New Years fireworks through fog from a friends balcony overlooking the Mississippi while her husband made us Bananas Foster; omelets at the Camillia Grill where my best friend and her friends used to go after the prom.

Mostly I think about my lovely brother, a fine blues guitarist, who lived and played in NO for what I think must have been some of the happiest years of his life. Sadly, he passed away two years ago. The catastrophe in NO would have broken his heart.

Honey, this sucker's a '94...real honest to God cork! A tad past it's prime but still drinkable.
'Specially when one is lightly tipped to begin with.
Cheers!
Or as they say in France "Tchin, tchin; A la Votre!"

Now all I need is some chicory coffee and beignet to complete the evening.

Hum...stray memory of NOLA childhood...Swansons Seafood Restaurant...on the bayou...most incredibly tasty garlic cajun shrimp served in those plastic baskets lined with wax paper...so spicy it racked the innerds for days but my oh my were they good...

Those who've know the place please raise a quiet, respectful Cheers to Swannie with a prayer they made it thru.

Still working on my bottle here. I live about 30 minutes from the Bonny Doon tasting room and I've never been to it. One of these days...

Another memory just popped into my wine fuzzed brain...Barbeque shrimp at Mr.B's. Seriously the best damn thing I ever ate in my life. I knew it would be good when the waitress brought out the plastic bib.

Poison? No wine tonight although I did have a martini with Dinner earlier at a new (to us) restaurant, now it's Bass, I needed something fizzy and deep

Never visited NO, we've only lived in the US since Nov 2001 so while we've visited NY (4 times), SF, Toronto, Connecticut - DD lives there now - most of New England and the Caribbean 3 times we never made it down to LA.

We're hoping to visit family in KY at some point after our visit to Montreal later this month.

So many places so little time or it that ?

No poison tonight. I was putting sod down at my new house and now I can't sleep
We have been to NO several times-living so close. My most vivid memory is that of a Sunday morning in Jackson Sq coming upon a memorial service for fallen firemen and policemen. On another trip we were given a kitten moments before we left so we had it with us in our slave quarter room at the Corn Stalk Hotel!
We were fortunate to have stopped in NO just a month ago for an overnighter.
And we will be back before long I am sure.

Oh Scarlett, everytime you mention Whole Foods I could cry!! I LOVE that place and I don't have one here in Reno. We have Trader Joes but it just pales by comparison to Whole Foods. We are getting a ton of new stores opening just before Christmas this year, so maybe a Whole Foods might be in our future. Oh it would be lovely. Enjoy your pizza.

oooh, I hope Kal posts on this particular thread. He has since told me, "What happens in NOLA, stays in NOLA!"

Let's just say we all had breakfast together.

'00 Riserva Ducale - a housewarming gift - good, not great.
Went to medical meetings on two occasions. Enjoyed hours of walking in the Garden District, the aquarium, zoo and many no name restaurants.
The meetings were good for a nap.
