SigH..the only poison so far (it's Sunday) has been black coffeee and grapefruit juice. Bigger, biggest sigh..Oh the beloved New Orleans. I have been several times. A good friend took off for N.O. after the death of her partner and lived on Chartes Street while working @ Tulane. She turned me on to the A&P in the quarter,Pimms Cups @ Napolean House, Hove perfumes, boudin sausage, beignets, pickled okra and Sunday "supper" @ Galatoires. We also spent a very drunken night at a bar in Algiers that doubled as a Trailways bus station.

Several years and several trips later I added some other highlights like Marie La Veau's grave, a cemetary tour on All Saint's Day, The Born Divas @ The Mint at the corner of Decatur and Esplanade, Snug Harbor, poking around the antique shops on Magazine Street and pciking up pralines from the Carmelite Nuns up in the Garden District. We spent a lovely (birthday) night @ La Maison Ville but usually always stayed at the LaFitte Guest House. Miss Lily delighted us @ LaFitte's Blacksmith Shop and called us after the big quake here to make certain we were ok. Beautiful amber crystal deco goblets I had hand carried from a Magazine Street shop
broke in that same quake. I polished a pair of earrings bought for me @ Thomas Mann's Gallery on Magazine Street years ago and wore them this week.

Ah..and just sitting in St. Louis or visiting the spot of Mother Cabrini's nursery..dinner at Brigtsen's.. a dozen oysters Bienville @ The Acme...it's all a memory.

We visited the elderly mother of a co-worker on one trip to NO. She lived in the area around Carleton Street which I am certain must all be destroyed. Thankfully, she died without having seen this devastation.

Thanks for starting this post.

My poison is the same each day: OJ for breakfast, Mountain Dew at 7 a.m., water the remainder of the work day, milk with supper. (boring, huh?)

Yes. I was in New Orleans in February 2002. We spent a week at the Hyatt by the Super Dome -- the one with the blown in windows and insulation flapping in the breeze now.

Most of my memories are related to food. That's not a bad thing!

About six weeks before Katrina, I ordered more seasonings from the School of Cooking. When Katrina hit, I headed to my local grocery to pick up a few boxes of Dirty Rice and Jambalaya -- in case Zatarain's isn't shipping for a while.

I lived in New orleans for two years in the mid-1980's. They were talking about what would happen if a big storm made the "direct hit" back then, and probably for eons before that.

Many of my friends there were of the belief that, "all politicians are corrupt so you may as well vote for the smartest one..."

The whole levee program has been controversial for decades and now as we hear reports of flood control money being diverted to support gambling interests and operations..well, sigh...

The food is wonderful; the people who cooked it even better. My uncle and his house on Esplanade..who knows what has happened to them....we sit and wait for answers.

No posion today-Friday night it was Maker's Mark.
So many wonderful memories of my 5 trips to New Orleans. Once I left KY when it was 20 below zero (very cold for KY but it happens) and arrived in New Orleans where they apologized for the 45 degree weather (It got up in the 70's by the end of that week).
I found a New Orleans t-shirt this morning as I was cleaning out a drawer and just washed my Pat O'brien's Hurricane glass. (Oh, the memories it stirs). Hope to return again.
I have signed up to join a medical relief team. Do not know yet where in Louisiana, Mississippi or Alabama that I will be sent.

I've been to NO three times:

1. As a child in the 70s with my family. It was VERY hot and VERY humid (and we lived in a place with heat and humidity). What I remember most was that my dad got very ill and was rushed to a hospital...probably a shellfish allergy.

2. DH and I lived hundreds of miles away when we were dating. Our second "date" was meeting in NO. Now THAT was a good time.

3. The last time I was there was on business. I did eat some good meals but otherwise I was miserable. The client - possibly the dorkiest man on earth - INSISTED on spending our one free night at the casino - it was so dull watching him gamble, knowing that all of NO was out there.

Sorry to be missing Friday night-we drank a complementary house cabernet at our hotel. At the bar we met a couple from NO whose vacation occurred just before storm, so they were already on their way to SF. Not knowing to what they will return.

We went to NO in the late 80's with DH's parents. Loved the food and music. Enjoyed watching the birds take over tables as the buffet-goers re-filled their plates, then returned, oblivious, at Court of Two Sisters.

There was a sadness though-the bars and stuff considered risque in the 20's, just seemed sad to me. Here's to a successful, wonderful rebirth.

Oh Kal~about that polish sausage..we gave our 3 yo neighbor an anatomically correct baby boy doll yesterday. She undid his diapers and exclaimed "Look, he has a peanut".

Out of the mouths of babes.....

Sunshinesue:

Thanks for your offer. Today I found another spot on the web that's still shipping the Cafe du Monde coffee. I ordered half a dozen cans and hope Cafe du Monde itself will soon be back in business.
