Eating in New Orleans

Anyone have any recent or not so recent dining experiences in New Orleans? I would like to hear.

Thanks,

Lucci

Lucci, Here is a copy of some suggestions I had earlier sent to another poster. I am a New Orleans native and go back home often to visit friend and relatives. Let me know if you have any questions:

If you can check out this thread on line while you are in N.O., here are a few of my favorited places in the "hood": Both Liuzzas (one on Bienville St--my favorite, and the one by the Fair Grounds), Ye Olde College Inn on Carrolton, R&O's near Bucktown and the lake, Parkway Bakery for Po-boys, French pastry and quiche at any of the LaMadelaine's, a genuine and authentic N.O.-style "snow-ball" from Pandora's on Carrolton near City Park and Plum St. Snowballs uptown, New York Pizza on Magazine (owned by my husband's cousin), The Coffee Cottage (used to be owned by MY cousin, try the crawfish bread), Cheesecake Bistro on St. Charles (if it has re-opened,owned by Emeril), Felix's or Acme in the FQ, Napoleon House (hot muffalettas in the courtyard), Dooky Chase's on Orleans and Broad for the real-deal Soul Food), Mother's on Poydras (?), Bud's Broiler hambuugers WITH the sauce, The Gumbo Shoppe (FQ). Is that enough? If I had to pick only one of the above it would be the Liuzza's on Bienville--shrimp po-boy, onion rings, giant frosted mug of Abita beer, and artichoke/shrimp bisque, stuffed artichokes. To me Liuzza's is the ultimate N.O.-experience place to eat. Now I'm crying again.

Maybe Bayou Gal will also pitch in here and help you out a little too.
Here's my basic theory--there really are NO bad places to eat in New Orleans. If it wasn't good, it wouldn't stay open for long, believe me!!

We were there from 9/23-9/26 and had a great meal at Acme Oyster House. I'll probably get beat up for this one, but their andouille/chicken gumbo was the best we've had there lately. Cajun Cabin was good for the sampler plate - little bit of this, little bit of that. Burgers at Yo Mama's. In the past we've had good meals at Maspero's and if you don't go to Cafe DuMonde for breakfast, Petunia's has been our next best bet.

Sorry, I should add that our places are all in the Quarter since we didn't have access to a car.

missjane, I think you're right once you get out of the Quarter, but we did have a couple of bad meals.

We had such bad service at Cafe du Monde that we left and went to Cafe Beignet across the street (we didn't actually get served at all, the waitress sat down and started reading a magazine and then got crappy with the people at the table closest to her when they said something, and at that point we left). Cafe Beignet ended up being better all around!

Galatoire's was awful. Absolutely, positively awful, and easily twice as expensive as it should have been. It tasted like nursing home cafeteria food. I had to salt my food! I have to scrape salt off french fries- there's no way that there was ANY salt in it.

We chose Mila on a whim, and it was outstanding! It's one of the best values in fine dining we've had- seriously good food, especially for the price.

Commander's Palace was outstanding as well. The bread pudding souffle was almost a religious experience!

We ate at K-Paul's in 2006- outstanding! We were torn about going back- it was fantastic, but there were so many other places we wanted to try that we didn't.

Montrel's by the French Market was great. We decided to pop in for a snack (splitting an entree- we had 8:30 Commander's reservations) around 3 or 4. Well, we got there as the kitchen was turning over, so it took forever. Instead of leaving us waiting, the waitress (Duffy) just kept bringing us lagniappes- a few boiled crawfish, some bread, some bisque- we had to waddle back to the hotel and nap after our snack we were so stuffed!

Dear Missjane,

Thank's so much for your help. Your suggestions sound interesting and unique. Isn't the Napoleon House one of the oldest buildings/bar? Muffalettas better than the much talked about Central Grocery or just different.

I will "2nd" missjane on several of her picks.

Liuzza on Bienvills is great and classic.

R&O's is wonderful and part-owned by someone I met in Egypt (I went there all thru my college days and never met him).

Can't beat NY Pizza on Magazine.....it's still #1 with my kids.

My DH prefers Felix's to Acme for oysters.

OMG....give me some Bud's Broiler....a #4 with hickory sauce and cheese!!!! YUM! (I have the phone number for the one by my mom programmed in my phone!)

And - for something a little different. La Crepe Nanou off of Prytania and Robert (I think) has been one of our fav places for 20 years!

Miss Jane, you done good! All the recs you've received, lucci, are great ones.

I'll talk desserts:

Angelo Brocato's
214 N. Carrollton Ave. (near City Park)

There's gelato, lemon ice, many kinds of coffee, pastries, many kinds of biscotti and cookies, spumone, tiramisu, and much, much more.

It looks like a little hole in the wall but you will not be disappointed! ;-)

It's been a while, but I had a very memorable experience at NOLA (http://www.emerils.com/restaurant/2/NOLA-Restaurant/) when I was there for a board meeting. Great atmosphere, terrific service and, of course, the food was wonderful!

Our two best meals when we visited over Memorial Day weekend were at Lillette

In May, Cochon was a big disappointment. Jacques Imo's was absolutely best of the trip, very casual, huge portions, reasonable. Downside, they don't take reservations and you need a car or a taxi.

Dear All,

I am planning on wearing good walking shoes and bringing a bottle of tums. Any idea where to get a map o NOLA so I can plan my eating adventure?

Thanks,

Lucci

You may want to look at Tom Fitzmorris' reviews on his website at www.nomenu.com. His ratings are usually accurate and restaurants are listed by neighborhood or cuisine. You also get the latest scoop on what's happening.

Besides the French Quarter, you can walk in the daytime to the Marigny (Bywater) and Warehouse District. You will need to take a cab or streetcar to Garden District, Uptown and Riverbend areas which have many wonderful local restaurants. Hope this helps.
