We are thinking of flying into Las Vegas and then renting a car and do some camping in Utah. Will it be warm enough to tent camp in early May?

Any suggestions for great state parks to camp and hike on the trip from LV to Zion?

Between LV and Zion NP we love two state parks excellent for hiking; Valley of Fire in Nevada and Snow Canyon in Utah. Never visited in early May. In March it could be wicked cold and extremely windy.

Yes, with the proper sleeping bags and clothing. Many years ago we did a horseback with outfitter trip in the San Juan mts. of Colorado. We camped next to snow banks, and the water the outfitter's wife had in her tent at night froze, but were always warm enough.

Snow Canyon is nice and should be quite warm by that time. It's near St. George, UT. Valley of Fire is also good and closer to Las Vegas , should be just as warm. Highs at both parks should be in the 80s. If you hit a hot spell it could get into the 90s. The more secluded tent sites at Snow Canyon are up against a large rock formation which helps hold heat at night, and they don't get as much of a breeze as some of the other sites.

Even Zion should be warm enough. If you want to check the temps there you can look at this webpage:

Cedar City is a couple thousand feet higher in elevation so their temps are cooler than Zion and Springdale (which is the town right outside the main Zion entrance).

May will be just right for camping. I gets quite warm by May in Zion and the immediately areas such as Snow Canyon. Bryce would still be cold as it's at 8,000 ft.

Make sure you have reservations for camping everywhere you decide to go! You will definitely need them.
