I think you have a great idea. Texas has no state income tax. I'm not sure about Florida. Or you could come to the Midwest. You could buy a 3000 to 4000 sq ft. house in Columbia, Mo. in a great neighboorhood for less than $300,000. It's half way between St. Louis and Kansas City. Great place to live and very beautiful scenery. I believe the weather in Mo. would be similar to Washinton DC. Cold in the winter and hot in the summer with beautiful spring and fall.

Update:

Our house is on the market. We have decided to sell it and move to Erie, PA. We have gone up to Erie and looked around and loved it. Great salt in the earth people (traditionally a blue collar town). Demographically Erie is not diverse. It is 80 percent white, 18% black and 2 everything else. Very few foreign born in Erie. Crime very low.

The housing prices are great. A 1600 sqaure foot home built in in 1980s was less than $100,000. With our savings and the profit from the house we can live on the interest (as long as we earn at least $500.00 a month from part time jobs. After we start collecting social security at age 62 then were set.

We are looking forward to getting involved in the community, playing golf, taking classes and kicking back.

Congratulations, Ted, I hope you have a great time.

Erie is indeed full of nice people. But are you sufficiently familiar with its year-round weather situation to be sure about this choice?

Your choice certainly suggests that this is a troll post.

But if you really chose, out of all the places in the country, Erie, PA, I have to predict you won't last there. One year will do it. One winter plus one fall and spring that look like winter. You might think it's well-placed between Buffalo and Cleveland if you miss city activities, but think about that: it's Buffalo and CLeveland and you might not be able to even get there with lake-effect snows that'll isolate Erie when the rest of the country has sunn.

Okay, I'm being really churlish and unfair to the good people of Erie. I'm sure they're great. But they'd have to be to put up with that weather, which drove me to near insanity after 4 years in the Buffalo area.

I think the people in Erie are some of the best people in America and much of the cities glories have to do with the cloudy weather in the winter. Instead of hanging outside for ever, they devote them selves to the community in inside activities. Go Erie!

If you haven't made a move yet. take a ride out to theShenandoah Valley. Drive rte 11 from Strasburg south to New market and marvel at the way of life in the small towns of Woodstock, Edinburg, Mt. Jackson, and New Market.

Taxes on a new $200,000 home in Woodstock, about $1600.00. Water, sewer, and weekly trash pickup included. Streets get swept and plowed.

Off I 81. Driving time to Vienna Metro, 1 hour, another i/2 hour or less to DC.
