walking the golden gate bridge

my 22 yo daughter and i are taking a trip to sf in september. I am afraid the bike tours across the golden gate may be too strenuous for a 53 yo but i am a pretty proficient walker. is is possible to walk across the bridge then down into sausalito for lunch then take the ferry back to sf.

Walking the bridge is a modest distance on an excellent sidewalk and highly recommended. Walking to Sausalito is all downhill, a bit less than 2 miles, and on variable condition path. I will defer to another who has made that trip more recently as to the exact current status of pathways.

We walked across the bridge and back in Feb and it was great. We then continued on to walk to Fisherman's Wharf. Very nice time. Didn't walk to Sausalito as we had already been over there. I fit your description, so you should be fine.

To the bridge you can take MUNI buses: 28, 29 (if from downtown, any bus going west, ask the driver where to get off) or bus 76 on sundays.

If you walk across the Bridge before about 1PM, you will have the sun in your face while looking back at the City. Also, the views back to the City from Sausalito will be obscured by the sun in your face. The views won't really be that great.

I think it would be much better to start this walk at 5pm and have dinner in Sausalito. Perhaps watch the night fall over The City.

Visit Ft Point at the base of the Bridge (on the SF side) before you walk over it. Ft Point is only open on Fri, Sat, & Sun.

If you do decide to do dinner in Sausalito, expecting to take a
ferry back to SF be sure to check the schedules as the ferry(s)
don't run much past 8PM.
