Has anyone stayed at the Waikiki Beach Marriott recently? I remember reading some poor reports about it last year, but reports now are good. Also, how is the beach across the street? ok for swimming?

Can't tell you anything about the guest rooms, since I only attend day seminars there.

The beach is Waikiki Beach, and yes, it is ok for swimming. If there's a jellyfish warning, do not ignore it.

ago used to me the Hawaiian Regent.

I just stayed there at the end of September and I found it was a really good deal. We did get upgraded to the Kealohilani tower to an ocean view room because I let them know we were there for our anniversary. The room was large and nicely furnished. I think the hotel was recently renovated, everything looked fairly new, fresh paint etc. The beach across the street is great for swimming, it is protected by a seawall so there are no waves. If you want to play in the gentle surf you can just walk a short way and go the beach on either side. The pools are small and nothing special but that is true of most Waikiki hotels unless you go somewhere like Hilton Hawaiian Village. The hotel employees were all very friendly and I will stay there again.

I stayed there last september for a week for business. The room was nice...very comfy fluffy bed. The beach is very narrow near the marriott - however it is narrow along most of waikiki. I liked the location - you can walk to everything easily. if you want more beach, stay at the hilton hawaiian village - it's at the end of the strip but the beach is the widest there.

We were there in July and were very pleasantly surprised, it was a lot nicer than we expected. The service was great, breakfast buffet was wonderful, everything well-kept, great location in Waikiki, really don't have much negative to say except for the view. Here's a hint -- don't pay for a partial oceanview -- we only saw a sliver of the ocean off the balcony because we were in the back building. Either go for the full oceanview or just go for city view. We paid for partial oceanview for two adjoining rooms for three nights and felt we wasted the $200 total price difference. Also, try to get a corner room (we had one) they are larger.

I don't know if that's true or not. What did he mean by "burning off"? I've been at the beach on a sunny day during a box jellyfish invasion and they're still there. Also, a dead jellyfish will still sting.

There are always news reports reporting the number of people being stung at Waikiki and Ala Moana beach during these invasions - sometimes it numbers as many as 100 - 200 people. I would say better safe than sorry.

Cornelius - grow up already.

Cornelius, it's possible the lifeguard was new and didn't know what he was talking about. I have first hand experience getting stung by a jellyfish at 4 p.m., and it was washed up on the shore so it was dead.

Also, I used to work at the Hawaiian Regent, and quit in May 2000--it changed over to the Marriott exactly 4 years ago, not 24 months ago.

If you hate to be doubted, then maybe you should only post about things that YOU are certain about, rather than second hand information from someone that "should" know what they are talking about. Sheesh.
