Tony, I have been to all 50 states. I have spent the night and played golf in each. I agree that to do this you might want to look at borders and hit 3 or 4 states in a day. However, I think one of the highlights of our country is our national parks. Click on National Parks on this web site or go to www.nps.gov. You will see absolutely beautiful sights. Also the list of cities given by someone else are quite fascinating. Several years ago I started in GA and went to AL, MS, AR,TX, NM, AZ, UT, ID, OR, CA, NV, UT, CO, KS, MO, IL, IN, OH, PA ,NJ, MD, DE, DC, VA, NC, SC and back to GA in 7 weeks. Admitedly the trip from CO back to GA was pretty much none stop with not much sight seeing. But is was only about 4 days out of the trip. We played golf about 20 times and we saw 13 national parks as well as staying in some cities. It was a fabulous trip. By the time we hit Utah we were pretty tired and spent a week in Salt Lake City. We had a condo share there so it was convenient. I might pick a different city to stay in for a week if we had a choice. You might also want to post under each state and ask the residents what there is to see. The book 1000 places to see before you die also covers each state although I am not sure I agree with some of the recommendations. Feel free to email me if you have any questions about my trip.

A very low estimate for daily costs on this would be $70, not including the cost of the rental car. A rental car would run at least $200 a week, not including insurance. That brings you to a very low estimate of $8700. I would guess $10,000 is more like it, and that won't be plus living.
Do you really have upwards of $10,00 to do this?

I'll answer your question as soon as you answer mine. I want to drive and cover all the countries of Europe, Eastern as well as Central and Western, all of Scandinavia, and of course all of the British Isles as well. I will have a little over 2 months to do this. What is the best way to cover all of Europe in that time and what should I plan to see.

Damn. When will I learn to look at the dates before responding as if I'm actually talking to poster who is probably long gone or certainly no longer interested in a response?
I see sdtravels brought it up this afternoon after 9 years of "sleeping".
I wonder if Tony Hughes ever made this trip?

a few days in California? that's how long it will take you to drive through it without making any stops. not sure if you realize that it's the size of some of the countries in Europe. "a few days" is only enough to see SF, for example. I guess the question is whether you want to do this as a game of tag just to say you've driven through, or if you want to actually see places.
Would spending 3 total days in all of England or in all of France be enough for you? If yes, then yes, you can do California in a few days.
Use maps.google.com to map out how long it takes to drive from one destination to another first. This would be a fun trip, but I doubt you'll see enough of any of state or area to write about it as you'll be in your car the entire time driving with not much time to get out and explore things.
Can you extend your trip to 6 months? If not, you may want to cut out some areas, or consider flying for parts instead.

Hi there sdtravels, I wish I had a dollar every time I have responded to a post that is quite old!
If I was any help that is pleasant news sdtravels. I hope that you are able to take a fun trip in 2008. I haven't even started to think about what I want to do. Well actually to many trips are going through my mind actually and I can't afford all of them. Guess I will get the taxes done before I make any decisions. Happy New Year to you and your loved ones!

I think 3 months is plenty of time. We drove from NJ to TX last year and saw 6 states in total over a 10 day period. We started off in NJ, drove to Charleston, WV for a night, then spent a night in Nashville, Memphis, Louisville, Little Rock, OK City, Dallas, Austin and Houston. This month, we flew to San Diego, stayed there for 5 nights, drove to Phoenix for a night, then to the Grand Canyon for 2 nights, followed by a night in St. George, UT and are in Vegas now. You can totally do it, just don't expect to see every part of every state. Have fun!
