Vinalhaven, Northhaven or Monhegan?
My husband and I are in the Rockland area for the month of June...our second time in this area. We like to hike and bike so we have been around Spruce Head, Camden Hills, Rockport area. We have visited Mt. Desert Island on 3 previous trips. (Can you tell that we love Maine?) Question: Is a trip to Vinalhaven or Northhaven worthwhile for biking and to experience something new? Which is preferable? The trip is quite pricey when taking a bike so we just want to make sure it is a worthwhile adventure.
Also, everyone refers to Monhegan as 'magical". We are considering a hiking trip to the island. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Any other ideas appreciated...we have done a lot of what is suggested in area guide books but are always open to exploring. We like to think that we are "living" in Maine rather than vacationing for the month so we also like the out of the way spots! Thanks, all!

We've been to Monhegan three times. We left from New Harbor on the Hardy boat, which allows some time to explore, but not enough to see it all, so the third trip we stayed overnight at the Island Inn. http://islandinnmonhegan.com It was pricey for what you get, but I think the best option, and certainly the best views.
The hike(s) around the island are beautiful, with vast seascapes from the headlands. There is also a very pleasant walk through the Cathedral Woods, a spruce and fir forest, should you wish to cut through the center of the island. The birding is supposed to be very good in season. Leave the bikes in Rockland.
I have to warn you that there is not much in the way of restaurants and no night life. We were there for a community talent show which had its moments, though!
The full time residents are lobstermen and their families. The summer residents seem to be largely artists. You will find painters scattered around. There is always a crew of them at Fish Beach, which also has a good spot to grab a lobster or crab roll.
So -- a beautiful spot for a day trip or overnight, but probably not for much longer unless you are and artist/photographer, a birder, or otherwise engaged in some project you want to complete in quiet, scenic surroundings.
