I am looking for suggestions for fall travel in the Northeast. I understand there is beautiful foliage at that time of year (?). Kind regards.

My first suggestion to you is that if you are serious about going you need to start planning now. Lodging reservations fill up quickly for fall in VErmont. Yankee magazine has a great website that lists lodging and places to go and see. www.newengland.com
If you are flying in, fly to Manchester NH, Albany NY, Hartford CT or Burlington VT (Boston is a pain). My suggestion would be to drive a loop from Burlington to Woodstock via Stowe, Woodstock to Brattleboro, over to Bennington, then back north toward Burlington (or in a different order depending on where you fly to) Arm yourself with a good map and take "back roads" to your destinations. Have fun!

The problem with a rigid schedule to view the fall leaves is that peak foliage time varies. It depends on rain fall, weather, etc. and the period of peak foliage is only a few days. What is constant is that the change occurs from north to south. What we have done is to fly into Boston which is sort of the middle. If it is a year when leaves change early we travel north. If it is a late year we travel south.
Rooms are generally available by looking early in the day.

Kelly, northern New England is indeed very beautiful in the fall. As mentioned previous, the leaves peak out sometime between mid September-mid October depending on latitude, elevation, weather, etc. There are hundreds of small b&b's, farms, and inns throughout Vermont and New Hampshire. Some of the prime areas are Woodstock Vermont (very touristy but beautiful), the White Mountains of NH ( spectacular, a hikers paradise, but can get trafficky in peak season). A wonderful area is the Hanover NH area - not too touristy, lots of great restuarants, beutiful back country roads. Since I live in this area, I can't really say I've stayed in any inns around here, but Dowd's country Inn in Lyme NH is a beautiful place in a tiny New England village. Just like you I am reluctant to use real E-address.
I have lived in south-eastern Vermont for 30 years now.
The foliage is beautiful, and yes it also does vary as to timing year to year.
Sometimes we are VERY wet and cold here. And other times the weather is so beautiful, you never want to leave.
Do visit the areas around Brattleboro, pretty, lots of artist types, and some great resturants and beautiful scenary.

Nancy: there used to be two great restaurants in Brattleboro, I can't think of the name of one, but one was T.J. Buckley, in an old diner? the other was also a man's name? Are they still there?

They are both on Elliot ST. in Brattleboro.
I like T.J. Buckleys more , atmosphere is cooler.
For those going to try it out.
Make reservations way ahead for both places, esp in Sept/Oct.
T.J.'s does not accept credit cards!
It seats only 20-22.
Michael is an exceptional cook!!!!
Even though the place is laid back, please don't wear shorts (I've actually seen people walk in in tank tops and shorts.)
It is a fairly expensive place with a nice, funky, fun atmosphere, so dress up at least just a little!
We in Vt. get so few occasions to dress up, that it is still fun for us.
