Vegas -- New York road trip help
Hi there,
I am taking a 10 day road trip from Vegas to New York. This is going to be my first major road trip so any advice would be most appreciated!
Specifically, I am looking for help with
- where we should stop by and see (we want to see yellow stone for sure)
- places to stay (we have a somewhat liberal budget)
- places/road to avoid?
Thanks a lot!!!

I'm not sure I understand. Are you renting a car and driving from Vegas to NYC - and want to know what to see on the way? Does the 10 days include or exclude time in NYC?
You're not talking about doing a roundtrip in 10 days are you?

The short route from Las Vegas to New York City is about 2500 miles. At 500 miles a day, that's 5 days. Let me assure you that if you're planning to make side trips like to Yellowstone, you won't have much time to see anything except the yellow lines on the highway. If your friend is moving household belongings that take more than a car to haul, it will take longer as you won't want to drive a truck as many miles per day.

I'd respectfully suggest that your question is too broad to be answered effectively. What are your interests? What route do you plan to take? Do you have any cities or destinations in mind (other than Yellowstone)?
Perhaps you should start by joining & visiting AAA. Have a "triptik" done and get an idea of what cities/areas you'll be passing through/by.

I made it from NYC to Los Angeles in 3 1/2 days. So, at 60 miles an hour average, the actual drive time should be about 3 days, not 5.
In terms of where to stop, I suggest you narrow down which route you'd like to take.
From NYC, you can either head the route across NJ into Penn, Ohio, etc or a more Southerly route through Virginia.
If Yellowstone in Wyoming is an objective, maybe think about that northerly route and places along the way. Chicago, for instance.

AAA just opened TripTik to non-AAA members. If you haven't tried it yet, it may be a big help in terms of planning your route.

depends on when you go. but i would consider:
(i've driven x country 2 times by myself)
IF you are going AFTER memorial day (this has to do with mountain snows)
take 15 north out of vegas, take 89 (s or e) to springdale, see zion np. you can then also go to the north rim of the gc.
OR continue north on 89 to 70E and go to arches np, staying in moab (you might want to take a day or two here, lots to see and do) , continue on 70 thru grand junction co, then take 40 w (don't be fooled this is taking you north to grand lake, co. then get on 34 east (trail ridge road thru rocky mtn nat. park) - note you can only use this route if you are traveling post memorial day as trail ridge road may not be open.
then continue on 34 to 76 up to 80 mayb take in a day in chicago, and 80 takes you right to the gwb.
you can see quite a bit of the country this way.
