New York or Las Vegas

Can't decide if I want to vacation for five days in New York or go to sin city (Las Vegas). Any ideas would be appreciated. Just the wife and I for my birthday. Thanks.

How old are you, and what do you like to do and what is your budget? Vegas hotels and meals are going to be cheaper, but shows and gambling could be $$$. And what time of year? Winter in Vegas is not bad, spring and fall in NYC would be good, summer will be hot both places. If you want to lay around a pool in the summer and drink expensive drinks, go to Vegas. If you want to "see things" go to NYC. Check out the NYC pass to see the list of possible things to do http://www.newyorkpass.com/En/

Apples and oranges.

Do you want the real world - exciting, fascinating, with sights and activities you will find now here else?

Or do you want Disney for adults?

(I must admit I don;t get Las Vegas unless you're a gambler and have a lot to lose - so you get a bunch of freebies.)

Two tough choices as they are both so different. One is not better, REALLY depends on what kind of experience you want. I don't gamble and enjoy Las Vegas a lot. You can get show tickets at around half off if you DON'T buy them at the hotel. There are outlet kiosks on the strip that sell the show tickets.

If I had to pick one right now, I'd pick Vegas. It's designed for entertainment.

New York hands down. But not sure my opinion matters (one day every 10 years is enough Vegas for me, whereas I go to NY annually).

Vegas casinos did not interest me. I did like the sites around it, such as museums, Grand Canyon, exhibits, etc.

If you get tix for a magic show or a concert or some event not taking place anywhere, go to Vegas. Otherwise, for 5 days I'd choose NYC.

We went to Vegas once, enjoyed seeing the casino buildings, Hoover Dam, Red Rock Canyon, Atomic Testing Museum, exhibits at some of the hotels--but I can't imagine going back.

NYC is a different story for us--it would take many, many visits to see all the fabulous museums and architecture--and there is always excellent theater.

We did both last year. I would go back to New York in a flash. I have seen Vegas now so have no desire to go back. We went to Vegas after NY and as much as I enjoyed it I would have preferred to be back in NY.

It really depends on what you want to see and do. Vegas may be perfect for what you want.

For me, walking around the streets of Manhattan was far more exciting than walking the strip of Vegas. Best part of Vegas for us was hiring a car and driving to the Canyon and staying overnight and the three shows we went to see.

Eating out in New York does not have to be expensive either.
