Vegas early April? How crowded, when to book? Our hotel choices for cheap and good pool?
My sister and I are thinking about going to Las Vegas for our 46th birthday. We would love to go to a nice tropical beach location but don't have the time or $$. Dates would be 3/31 (our birthday) through 4/2. How crowded is Vegas at this time and when should we book? I know that it could still be chilly, but we'll just hope it's warm enough to lay out by the pool, even if we can't swim, so we're leaning towards Flamingo, Tropicana and Treasure Island. Also looking at these three as they are less expensive than others. Rooms and Casinos are not as important as the pool atmosphere. Would appreciate comments. Thanks!

I think you're squeezing in between the spring-breakers and the April conventions, so that should be a fairly decent weekend room-rate-wise.
Flamingo has a beautiful pool area when it's not full of kids, and it's probably going to have the best room rate. Also a great location right across from the place-to-be for two sisters, Caesar's Forum Shoppes.
The Orleans would be a good choice if you like privacy at the pool. Really nice pool area, good restaurants, and low room rates because you're off the strip. Their shuttle bus brings you right to the strip so if it comes down to budget, go for the Orleans.
You could book something now, but make sure its changeable/cancellable in case a better promotion comes up. Keep checking the "special offers" section of the TI and Flamingo websites, rates will probably be coming up pretty soon for March and April. You might also want to call in February to make sure they arent' doing pool construction or anything else that will close the pool area temporarily.

Thanks for the help! I should have mentioned that my sister has been to Vegas a couple times, but stayed with friends, never on the strip, and I have never been to Vegas at all. Also, we'll be moving to Costa Rica next year so won't get another chance to go to Vegas for a LONG time, if ever, so I think we should be on the strip. I'll look into the Mirage. I was basing my hotels on best pools, didn't know Mirage has a good one too, so I'll check it out. Thanks!

Mirage, Monte Carlo, MGM and even the Stardust have very nice pool areas that shouldn't be crowded at that time of year. Some of the pools don't officially open until April so that might weigh on your decision..the weather can be VERY nice in early April so being able to swim might be nice.
I lived in Costa Rica for a summer as a teenage exchange student. Nicest people in the world! I hope you're not moving because you have some insider-information that you-know-who is gonna get four more years here!!!

Oh My! How could I forget that the Mirage has captive mammals. I'm sorry, I just can't stay there. I don't want to change the focus on this thread, but will just say I don't agree with keeping intelligent mammals in a concrete pool! Oh well. From what I have read, my other choices have some of the best pools and have at least one heated pool, so even if it is chilly, those pools should be open....why heat them if not?
Tracy, even though I'm moving...I still hope that you-know-who will not be in office another 4 years. That said, I also don't want to turn this into a political thread, and hope I don't discurage others from posting about my Vegas questions regardless of my views on captive mammals and politics!

Hi Ally,
How's that hotel coming?
Just a few things FYI:
Many schools here in Southern Cal either start or end their spring breaks on the weekend of 4/1-4/3. Since Vegas gets many of their weekend visitors from here, it might have a bearing on availability/prices.
Flamingo also has a penguin & flamingo exhibit, if that is a concern to you. Mandalay Bay has a shark reef exhibit.
Tropicana is kind of older and run-down and at the far end of the strip. You might get the best rates here, but you should keep that in mind.
The best rates I've found in Vegas lately are usually flight/hotel packages. Try travelzoo.com.
Have fun.

Ivk-
My husband returns from Costa Rica tomorrow night and by Monday we'll finally be awarding the job to an architect...then wait a couple months for permits, hope to start building in Dec!
I know I'll get beat up for this but although I don't like the thought of caged birds or birds with clipped wings and sharks in fake reefs, it does not bother me as much as dolphins in a concrete tank. They are too intelligent to belong in a fake world.
I'm seriously leaning towards Flamingo now...or at least I'm crossing Tropicana off the list from what you all have said, so thanks!
I was afraid I was going to get hit by spring breakers but I'll have to live with that...
Go Travel....I think Easter is March 27th, the weekend before I go? So I hope I don't get caught up in those crowds too, but in any case, sounds like it's going to be busy!
Do I need to book this far in advance or would you wait?
Thanks all!

Looks like Treasure Island already has a special rate of $99 offered that weekend,so Flamingo will probably end up coming in somewhere close to that when their specials get posted.
Treasure Island is the sister property to Mirage (with the dolphins)...otherwise I'd tell you took lock in that $99 rate by booking now, there is a 48 hr cancellation policy.

we have an April 28-May 1 trip planned - not too large of conventions at that time, but room rates are HIGH. Looking at TI, Monte Carlo, Flamingo. Do you suggest we should book something now that is cancellable just in case better deals show up later?? Traveling with 2 other couples.
