St George is a small town where many people from Salt Lake retire to or visit because of the warmer weather in winter. There are plenty of small hotels, restaurants and a few outlet stores. There is also a small college there as well. The weather is similar to Vegas, maybe a little colder.

Yes, I've been there. Agree with other posters that it's a small town, but nice to stay in and drive to Zion from there. Don't know when you plan on going, but all the Utah college kids converge on St. George for Spring Break, so be aware of that if you go at that time. Look up the St. George Chamber of Commerce Website, they'll have info.

St. George isn't THAT small of a town! It's pretty big as far as Utah goes...LOL! Here's a link to Lodging in St. George.

If you are coming from Vegas why not stay closer to the parks. If you stay in Springdale, Utah you can see Zion Canyon from the town. From Springdale you are right at Zion and only 85 miles to Bryce. From St. George it's 40 miles to Zion and 125 miles to Bryce. These are all one way mileages.

And if you're coming up from Las Vegas, make a stop at Valley of Fire State Park in NV. Some great rock formations there, and a goodly batch of Indian petroglyphs. Got some pictures at http://community.webshots.com/user/bookhall .
We spent the night in St. George last month on our LV-Zion-Bryce trip. Nice small city, with a number of less-expensive motels in town.

I think wherever you go, lodging should be the least important part, as the area is very unique and worth seeing (i.e., driving around!)
In my opinion, St. George is small and none of S. Utah towns are the attraction - its the geography, parks, etc.
One of our trips, we use Kanab as a base for GC, Bryce and Zion.
Look for very, very large homes in that area and then study some of the history of Utah (I'm not judging, it is just interesting)
I fould AAA books very helpful for our S. Utah trip. Whatever you do, make a reservation (or 2 or 3) so you have some options. Those parks and area are worth every minute.
