Useful Information for the Subway

This is one of my favorite posts about annoying subway riders. If you are traveling to NYC and taking the subway, please try not to be one of these people.

And I'd also add the following:

People who try to bring giant strollers on the subway. Even small strollers shouldn't be brought on the subway during rush hour. It's ok at 11am or 2pm but no other time.

People who want to travel in a giant group. Seriously, let's stop with this foolishness. I see it most with groups of students traveling together. Haven't you ever heard about the buddy system (as in ONE buddy ... not 50)? Or at least group 4 kids with one adult chaperone. Otherwise, perhaps you should walk.

Not nearly as bad as any of the offenses in the original post, but more and more people are playing whatever on their smartphones in trains and buses. Smartphone speakers aren't that powerful, but enough to be annoying.

Blog posts about public transportation always crack me up. Have you ever seen the video on youtube that involved a fight over someone eating spaghetti on the subway?

Way to welcome people to NY, Doug.
("Otherwise, perhaps you should walk"??)

Virtually all the offenses listed are done by locals, not tourists.

I suppose this is where someone will link to the old and aging "rules of the subway" posts here on Fodors.

Besides the list above:

People who bring their bikes on the train, especially at rush hour.

Guys who read the paper with legs apart so others cannot sit.

People who let their kids take up two or three seats.

People who keep their backpacks on their backs instead of taking them off.

Now that I am old, I realize how we must terrorized others when we were kids on the subway. We were loud, did pull-ups, started make believe fights, and pretend to throw up among other things.

The only thing tourists do that is annoying and somewhat dangerous, is stand in front of the stairs or subway door because they do not where they are going. Just step to the side.
___

And the Rules of the Subway are brilliant.

Something to agree on.
