Stephanie - Don't know why you think Spiderb2 is driving across the US. Obviously he is flying which he mentioned in his itinerary. He also mentioned that he is visiting both coasts because that's where his friends live.

September will be a little warmer than October but except for Las Vegas where it will still be very hot, the weather should be nice.

In Los Angeles, you would probably like staying in Santa Monica. The Huntley is nice and would run around $250 a night. Another popular hotel is the The Georgian which you can probably get for around the same price. Since your friend lives up in Valenica, I don't know if it would be better to stay close to her or closer to Beverly Hills or Santa Monica. If you friend is going to be showing you around and will use her car, then close to her house might be best. But if you are going to have a car or be sightseeing on your own, then I would recomend Santa Monica, Beverly Hills or West Hollywodd with SM being my first choice.

For San Francisco I would suggest staying in the Union Square area, which is convenient both for shopping and transportation and where the theatre district is.

The hotel suggestions given for SF are mostly in that area and are fine. We have stayed at the Nikko many times and like it.

If you do not already have reservations there, try this site...www.hotelres.com. They specialize in San Francisco and Silicon Valley reservations, at a discount, and, unless you choose a "super discount rate", or whatever they call it, you do not pay them upfront, but once the reservation is made, you deal with the hotel, to include cancellation, if necessary, according to the hotel's cancellation policy.

One hotel we have booked with them several times is The Donatello. The rooms are comfortable and large, and the package we have used includes breakfast in a nice top floor lounge.

early sept too hot and muggy! go later, end of sept. or beginning of oct. don't know your budget but i would not stay at the holiday inn in dc. (holiday inn on the hill yuck ) i suggest marriot. or courtyard by marriot. also hampton inns are clean, nothing super special but are hilton properties and i've never had a bad experience in one. but marriot wins over holiday inn IMHO.

I have heard of the Tabard Inn but had forgotten about them. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll check them out.

I have never driven on the other side of the road and I don't think this solo trip is the time to start.
As for the heat, I don't particularly like it but did enjoy the 34c+ temps when I was in Spain in May this year. If I'm in a foreign country I'll put up with lots of things 'just because I'm there'.

I'm a female spider and you are correct, I'm flying from city to city. Not driving anywhere. Thanks for the neighbourhood and hotel suggestions. I'm only expecting to catch up with my email pal for one day. (depending on the day of the week that I get there. She is a teacher). The other 2 days I plan to explore on my own. She has suggested (because of the LA sprawl) that I consider moving hotels each night. I don't think I will though. I don't have an LA map handy at the moment but when I can lay my hands on one, I'll look at the areas that you have suggested .

Thanks for the SF suggestions. I must admit that I haven't been checking SF hotels out very much yet, mainly because it is the city I'll be visiting at the end of my trip, I'm not meeting anyone there, so it will be a city visit 'just because'.

As I don't stay at a lot of hotels, particularly chain ones, I really have no real idea what is better than the other. Well that is not quite true. I stayed at a Sheraton hotel in Porto, Portugal, in May this year and the room amenities were more upmarket than the Marriott, that I stayed at in Lisbon. As a private traveller, Sheraton prices are way out of my range but I honestly had no idea where Holiday Inn, fitted in. From comments on this forum, I'm beginning to get an idea.

All comments and suggestions from eveyone are very much appreciated by me. Thanks
