Portland, Or Downtown Hotel Parking

I remember reading on a thread a while back that there is reasonable public parking in downtown Portland, Or. that might be a good alternative to hotel parking (expensive). We are staying at the Benson (Priceline). I have searched but can't find that thread. Can any of the Portland experts offer a suggestion?

There are quite a few SmartParks Garages in town. There is one very close to the Benson, only about a block or so away on Stark between 9th and 10th. These garages do not have the in/out privileges that the hotel valets parking has, but they are super cheap so check their website and see if the hours/rates work best or not for you.

Thanks mms. I located the SmartPark on the website map. It looks like it will be perfect if they accept overnight parking. We are looking forward to our visit to the Portland area next week. We've gotten lots of great information from you and other Fodorites.

We were in Portland last week. We found a boat ride on the river and a visit to the OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry) to be interesting. If you visit the rose test gardens in Washington Park you can take a small steam train from there to the zoo through the forest. It's a fun ride, even if you don't visit the zoo (smile).

Jt - if you see this - which boat ride did you take? I was looking at the jet boats and also a paddle wheel at the Cascade Lock. Were roses still in bloom?

There are roses still in bloom around town and lavender is blooming and scenting the air everwhere..bees are very busy
Go to the Japanese Gardens if you have time..they are worth seeing, anytime of the year.

Scarlett, I was hoping the gardens would still be lovely. I'm glad to hear there are still things in bloom (although I think gardens are interesting all year long.) We are also signed up to take a walking tour. Any other suggestions? We will also be doing day trips to the surrounding area.
