Where to Stay in Portland, OR WITH a Car

As part of a cross country trip we (2 adults) will be in Portland, OR this summer for a few nights. Any recommendations on where to stay with reasonable (even free!) parking. Thanks

Stayed at the Kimpton Riverplace last time we were there. parking was free and in a garage as I recall. Location is somewhat removed from the downtown area which woud be a minus for some.

Another vote for McMenamins. The Kennedy School is a great place, and in Portland so easy to get around to see and do things. If you want to stay out of town a bit, about 15 minutes east in Troutdale is their Edgefield Hotel, which is a lot of fun as well. Just not as easy to do all the stuff in town, but great for seeing the gorge.

Otherwise for free parking, take a look at the Inn At Northrup Station in the NW area of town. It is close to the zoo, Japanese/Rose Gardens, Pittock Mansion, and of course the numerous shops and restaurants that this area is known for.

If you only need a place to sleep and to make your breakfast, check out the HI Hostel @ 18th & Glisan.

There is some on street parking and 2 or 3 spots next to one of the 2 buildings.

On a week-long trip to Portland I rented an apartment on Airbnb in a very nice area outside downtown, Sellwood-Moreland. Good on-street parking, restaurants walking distance and the City of Portland has several reasonably priced garages right downtown when we wanted to be there. There were also buses we could have taken downtown but found the city garages worked well.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will check them out. Also, thanks for mentioning Air BnB. We'll only be there 3 nights, but I may be able to find something and an apt would be a nice break.

This is the apartment I was referring to, although I see they mention a 4 night minimum. However, many hosts are open to a "special offer" if it works for them, & you can always ask the hosts for a slightly shorter stay. In any case, this is the neighborhood I liked:

My daughter recently stayed at an airbnb in the Hawthorne area for I think $110/nt. it had a kitchen, washer and dryer and parking- enjoyed staying there.

The Inn at Northrup Station is good too. Short walk to restaurants, shops and close to trolley line.

There is a second HI Hostel in Portland on Hawthorne.
It also has a kitchen and laundry. http://www.hiusa.org/oregon/portland/hawthorne-district
I used the one on Hawthorne when the one on Glisan was full.

Thanks! MmePerdu - the apt looks nice and I think we may add a day to Portland so that could work although its a 2 bedroom which we dont need.

What other neighborhoods would people recommend to look for an Air BnB?

Again, look to the NW area, which is also known as the Alphabet District, and some people call it Nob Hill. Otherwise on the east side look at Irvington.
