OK, the Orchard, the Nikko, and the Monaco. (pool desire excluded).
The Orchard is a "charming" small hotel, with sort of a European feeling. The Nikko is a large, newer, hotel with a Japanese feeling....(of course), and a swimming pool, covered, on the top floor. The Monaco is a large, but more traditional hotel, which was renovated for several years (gutted, actually) from a venerable older San Francisco hotel. It is stylish, in an old San Francisco decor kind of way, and has an excellent restaurant...the Grand Cafe. We like to eat in the bar section of this cafe and have "small plates". Good food.
Depends on your 'druthers. Do a google, or look at them on the San Francisco Reservations site....hotelres.com...to get a feeling for them.

PS. We also like the Donatello. The rooms are large, with a nice sitting area. There is a wet bar with a fridge, microwave and coffee maker. If you open some drawers, you will even find plates and silver, and a sharp knife, in case you want to "eat in". But is is all very discreet. The staff is generally very nice.
