UPDATE: Our Travel Agent Failed Us/Four Seasons

For all the response my previous post received, I thought I would update you all...received a call today from the Four Seasons and it seems they had a cancellation for the dates we requested. Not only did we get in at a rate of $325, but we also got in on the four nights, get fifth free deal! So, our room per night with tax comes to $289!

Now, I'm thinking of just doing that for 5 nights and spending an extra $275 above what we planned just to have luxury for the whole trip!

However...here's another question for you all...if we plan on doing a lot of sightseeing and excursions is it worth it to stay here the whole time? We are not "sit by the pool" people and will be exploring the natural beauty of Maui. Am I better off splitting our time and just spenging a couple nights at the 4S? Opinions please!!

Changing hotels is a pain in the butt and after a long day of sightseeing it is always nice to come back to a little bit of luxury as well as a good bar to unwind in!

It's a good thing you're not pool people. The Four Seasons Maui does not have close to enough pool space or pool chairs. They advise their guests to be in line at the poolside chair reservation desk by no later than 6:00 a.m. every morning to book a chair. This tends to ruin a vacation when you have to set the alarm just to get a pool chair. I am not referring just to cabanas; I'm referring to chairs. I was appalled at this, since we were paying the Four Seasons $600 per night -- and more so since the line-up for the chairs actually started at 5:30 a.m. each day of our stay. No hotel is worth this hassle. I wrote a letter about this to the President of Four Seasons.
While he was good enough to reply, the gist of his response was "Too bad. That's the way it is." I would never stay there again and suspect the people who give this hotel glowing reviews have not actually bothered to witness this pre-dawn nonsense.

I had a totally different experience than Wayne at the Maui FS. We just stayed there a few weeks ago and had no problem at all with getting chairs at the pool. We were able to get chairs at any time of the day. We absolutely loved the place and had a great stay. Plus, the hotel has the greatest stretch of beach than that of any other hotel. I would highly recomment staying there and not switching hotels.

Tom-I don't want to switch hotels, it's only a question of how long we stay there for. If we are out and about for most of the day sightseeing, is it worth it? Or should we just spend 2 nights in a B&B or in Hana and cut costs at the same time? Thanks.

i would say that if it is convenient to stay at a B&B and the cost difference is significant, then i would go with the B&B.

That is an awesome rate for the Four Seasons. For someone who was so incensed about losing a deal because of travel agent negligence that you wanted to take legal action, I can't believe that now you're considering changing to a B and B for part of your stay. Five nights is not all that long. Stay at the Four Seasons and enjoy yourself!

Wayne -- Wow for whatever reason I would have never guessed you would have to WAIT (at 5:30 am no less) for a pool chair. No I am not a pool person but as you said at $600 a night there ought to be a spot at the pool for paying guests.

That was a new one on me......thanks for sharing!

Shannon-
I was NEVER going to seek legal counsel! You must be joking. I was most definitely incensed at how I was treated, but if you go back and read my original post you will see that I was only supposed to stay there for 2 nights as it was. I only booked for more so that I have the option. Our original plans always included a B&B for 3 nights because we felt we wouldn't be in the hotel enough to reap the benefits of it. It's a fabulous rate, don't get me wrong but we are still on a budget, so I just wanted opinions. Thanks again.

I can't believe anyone would spend all of that money to go to Hawaii to sit by the swimming pool. You can do that in Krapo, Kansas.

There is something called an ocean available. No waiting.

Congratulations Rachel! I say go for 2 nights at FS for the luxury experience, then the B&B. That's what I am planning to do while in nevis, 2 nights at FS, then 3 nights at a B&B known for great food.

Happy 4th or 5th July and enjoy your trip!!!!!!!!!!

P.S., I think I will stick to researching.
