I have two cheques written in $ to me from a Boston bank. I wish to cache them when I visit Orlando soon. How can this be done??

IF if is a bank with branches in the Orlando area, just go to a branch and have it cashed. They may want identification, but they are required to cash a check written on their own bank.

Most banks will not cash a check for anyone who does not have an account with them. our hotel might do it for you, or accept them towards your bill. This is called third-party payment.

Cache is a word of French origin meaning secret storage place. Cheque is the British spelling of check. Cheque is rarely used in the USA.

What kind of check is it? If it is written by a nationally known bank, or one that has many branches, you should be able to find a bank that will convert the check to spending money.

For example, if is a bank like Bank of America, State Street Bank, or First Boston, and it is a cashier's check, I see no problem.

If the check has the bank's own imprint, I hope you will be successful.

Because most banking is done electronically I am a little suprised that your own bank won't cash the check for you. Have you checked with them?

Graham, check on the web if the Boston bank has a branch in Orlando, you can't go just to any bank, they will not cash it for you. If there is a branch in Orlando make sure you have 2 pieces of picture ID or your checks will not be cashed. You can go to a Orlando check cashing place - not a bank - but it will cost you a lot!!!!! Your best bet is to deposit the checks in your bank where you live.

If your "cheque" is an official bank check, that means that the funds come from the bank directly and it clearly states this in writting, it may be easier to cash at most banking locations.

On the otherhand, if your check was written on the account of an individual or company, that happens to have a checking account at the Boston bank, it is unlikely that another bank will cash the check for you as you are not a customer. In that case, your only solution is to hope that the bank has a branch in Orlando or to pay a fee at a check cashing service.

before you go to orlando,

1. try to cash the check at a branch of the bank from which it was drawn;
2. deposit it in your account (if you have one) and wait for it to clear;
3. sign it over to someone else for cash;
4. go to a smaller bank, open up a savings account, deposit the checks in that account, wait for them to clear and then withdraw the cash.

i can almost guarantee you won't get the check cashed in orlando if you don't have an account at the bank.

The other option is to visit a check cashing service. These businesses charge a set fee + some percentage to cash the check. You need i.d. of some sort, I think. I don't know exactly how it works because I have never used one of these business. These businesses are often located in poorer areas of town for people who may not have bank accounts of their own (so they can cash their paychecks, etc.). Often the signs say something about check cashing, advances on paychecks, etc. Here is Hawaii these services are often next door to pawn shops.... Overall, given the service fees, etc. it might be cheaper to just deposit your check in your country and pay whatever your bank charges for converting the currency.
