Undiscovered places?

I know it's an oxymoron (how can you talk about a place that hasn't been discovered?), but what places made you feel like they were great and under-appreciated? Like maybe close to really popular places but somehow in a different world. Here's my list: (1) The eastern shore of Maryland away from the beach along the Pocomoke River, near Snow Hill, (2) Lewes, Delaware, (3) Assawoman Wildlife Refuge near Bethany Beach, (4) the Northern Neck in Virginia, (5) Jake's in Jamaica, and (6) the Moorings in Islamorada. Oh, and Hunting Island near Beaufort SC. Maybe Beaufort should be on the list too.

You might be helpful to the poster looking for a 3 day trip within a one day drive from northern NJ. Here's the link.

Ok, I suggested the northern nj poster consider taking the ferry from cape may to lewes and then drive down the beach to visit snow hill and berlin and the area west of ocean city in Maryland. Lewes is pretty cool. It's a old town, it's on the bay but the state park there is on the ocean, with big dunes, neat hiking trails, and almost empty beaches. Not all the beaches are almost empty. You might have to walk a bit...

Hunting Island...a WONDERFUL and still unspoiled place. As to Lewes..well, it is becoming less and less undiscovered every day....but once you go there you understand why that is so.

Santamonica, I've printed out your list.

For some reason, I almost always like the place NEAR the popular place much better than the place everybody raves about. You have hit upon my exact experience and I am intrigued by your locations. They are going on my list.

Your #5- Jake's in Jamaica. I'm going there in Feb. 05 if Ivan leaves enough to make it possible. Where is Jake's?
Your directions are appreciated.

My undiscovered place is an area in South Central Michigan (not on Lake Michigan) that is totally in this category. Vineyards, golf, water sports of every kind possible, historic (Mendon)- 20 spring fed lakes within 30 miles (Marcellus). Blueberry, strawberry, apple picking are all possible. Skiing/ snowmobiling in winter with NO traffic and drop dead beautiful all year.

Jakes is a small stylish hotel in Treasure Beach, a town on the southern coast west of Kingston. The area gets less rain and fewer tourists than the northern coast. http://www.islandoutpost.com/Jakes/location.htm

We stopped in Beaufort SC on our way to Charleston. The park along the water was wonderful and we watched someone fishing for shrimp.
We stayed at a NH resort hotel recently and got the impression that we were caught up among tourists from NY and MA. It was a lovely place, just not NH. Our favorite lobster place in ME had only 6 tables when we first discoverd it. It's only a few miles past Owl's Head Transportation museum. The last time we were there, the daughters had expanded by adding a covered porch. It's just a tiny place and we still chose one of the picnic tables overlooking the water. There is nothing else around it but scenery. We like the Damariscotta/Pemaquid Point area as well. Most people think of Maine as only Bar Harbor and the Kennebunks.
I think Concord NH is overlooked. It has a great downtown, nice restaurants and the NH Museum of History is right off Main Street. The McAuliffe Planetarium is nearby, Canterbury Shaker Village and the Kearsarge Indian Musuem are only a short drive away. You can canoe or kayak on the river. Great foliage. Beautiful spring flowers. A couple of theaters. Weekly lectures and musical events. A couple of galleries. Several times during the year, Main Street is closed off for events. Next Thursday the Scots are parading down Main Street before the Highland Games begin.
