UK to Atlanta and beyond
We had a Smoky Mountains, Memphis, Mississipi, Gulf Coast, New Orleans 15 day trip planned for 30th September. Most of our hotels have been cancelled by the hotels due to Katrina.
We are not able to cancel our flights from the UK to Atlanta on the 3oth September.
Where should we go on a roadtrip? We like cities / beaches / parks in fact everything and anything.
All suggestions gratefully received.

New York, Willamsburg, VA, Pennsylavania Dutch (Amish) Country, Washington DC....make sure you do at least part of the Smithsonian Institution, Atlantic beaches, Savanah, GA. are some suggestions.
Hopefully, this should be far enough away from the devastation to be able to find lodging?
Originally, I was going to suggest Pananama City,FL but they may be full of evacuees. But you may check their website.
There is a nice park in North AL, near Huntsville, called Joe Wheeler State Park.

robson1, how long is your trip?
You should still have no problem with the Smokies and Memphis. It's a pretty long drive from Gatlinburg to Memphis, so how about a stop in Chattanooga and/or Nashville on the way to Memphis. Tennessee is a great vacation state.

robson1-
since you are flying into Atlanta, a great place would be Savannah Ga(on the coast), Charleston SC on the Coast), Ashville NC ( mountains)Williamsburg Va( historic), and Washington DC...
See if you can rent a car in Atlanta and do the drive from Atlanta,to Savannah, to Charleston, to Williamsburg and end in Washington DC---and fly out of DC....
Most of the airlines are changing tkts with no penalty due to the hurricane...
Best of luck and have fun in the US!

I second the recommendation of Savannah and Charleston, they really are fascinating cities with lots of history and good food. There are also some interesting places and islands (such as Jekyl) along the coast south of Savannah.
