Hi all,

We have been in the USA for nearly 3 weeks and are having a wonderful time. Will post a report when back in Australia but I need a little last minute help please.

We have just arrived in Washington and are in a KOA in Millersville. We have access to the camp ground shuttle to the Capitol building.

My men would like to see not only the Air and Space Museum but also the Udvar-Hazy Centre near Dulles airport but I am having trouble trying to find public transport other than a taxi, which when entered into taxifarefinder, looks to be horrendously expensive.The only thread I can find is 12 months old so I am hoping there may be other options now.

Can you give me an option please for transport either from Millersburg or DC. In a perfect world I would like to do Arlington National Cemetery and Udvar-Hazy in the one day......Say catch the shuttle in to the Capitol and then a taxi to Arlington but what to do next.

From my research last year, the most feasible way to do it was rent a car for the day. Didn't end up making it though.

It looks like you can take the Metrobus from DC to Dulles Airport, then a VA Transit shuttle to Udvar-Hazy. Here is the Metrobus schedule:

But, doing that will cost $13 each round trip, so I can see tchoiniere's conclusion that renting a car for that day may be your best bet. But, then you'll have to factor in $15 to park at Udvar-Hazy. (Although I guess you could park for free at Wegman's and take the Va Transit shuttle from there for $1.00 each round trip. Wegman's is a chain of ginormous grocery stores and kind of an attraction in its own right).

Thats exactly why we were on the rental car. 4 of us at $13 R/T plus time. I could get a rental car at that point at $25 for the day plus taxes and fees. Add in parking and gas, we would probably have broke even but saved time (rental pickup was at our hotel). However, we just ran out time to do it...Need to get back there soon.

My wife and I did this via metro transportation and it was easy, fast and inexpensive.Take the metro rail to the Rosslyn station and go up stairs to street level. There board the metro 5A bus to Dulles airport. Disembark the bus and then board a Virginia Regional bus/shuttle at the same point you got off of the 5A bus. This shuttle takes you directly to the Udvar Hazy museum. Cost is about $3.00 per person each way and it takes about one hour. The museum is free and it is amazing if you are into aircraft. Use the search the forums search bar for Udvar Hazy museum and you will find more complete directions.

Just want to mention that there is construction going on the route of the metro bus 5A. Last time we took it (couple months ago) it took well over an hour to get to IAD. Also during the day often by the time the bus gets to Rosslyn, it is pretty close to being full. The first stop at L'Enfant Plaza has lots of people who get on so of the passengers that get on at Rosslyn many have to stand the entire way to IAD.

What a city you have in DC. We have loved our days here but I wish I had realised just how awesome and allocated a few more days. We would spend a week just in the National Mall area.
