Trip to West Virginia
I am planning a week-long trip to WV next summer. I plan to stay in two or three areas: the New River Gorge and Cannan Valley or Seneca Rocks. Listed below is everything I plan to do and see:
Cannan Valley/Seneca Rocks area:
Spruce Knob Tower
Smoke Hole Canyon
Hiking Seneca Rocks
Sightseeing (driving around) and hiking at Dolly Sods
Hiking Nelson Rocks
Seeing Blackwater Falls and the gorge overlook near the lodge at that state park and maybe some hiking.
Along the way to Cannan Valley from Fayetteville:
Beartown State Park
Cranberry Bogs
Highland Scenic Byway
The Falls of Hill Creek on the Highland Scenic Byway
Possibly a ride on the Cass Railroad and/or activities at Snowshoe and/or a night at Cass or Snowshoe
Along the way to WV:
Coopers Rock Overlook (I live in maryland and will be coming in on I-68, so this is along the way)
New River Gorge area:
New River Gorge (the bridge, some hiking, sandstone falls, and seeing the other major areas of the Gorge like Grandview)
Babcock State Park (see the Glade Creek Gristmill)
Hawks Nest State Park (maybe take the jetboat ride)
I guess I will shoot for Fayetteville as a base for the New River Gorge. What about Cannan Valley/Seneca Rocks, should I stay at Cannan Valley or Seneca Rocks? And for how long to do everything I want? Same for Fayetteville?
Thanks-

My gut tells me you'll need much more than a week.
I guess however it would ultimately depend on just how much hiking you do each day as you could easily spend a whole day at the majority of these parks/sites hiking.
The other issue is driving times. A lot of these places are off country roads. Have you checked driving times from location to location?
With regards to a place to stay, I've been pushing this place for a while but it's right in the middle of everything you'll be seeing in the Seneca Rocks/Cannan Valley area.

Hope that helps a little

On second thot: You ought to plan a rafting trip on the New River. It's absolutely the best way to see and experience the Gorge. The jet boats are fun (I've done it), but the time goes fast and you don't really get to revel in the beauty of what is flying by.
It's time consuming, but you can also drive all the way down to the bottom of the Gorge. Seeing the Gorge from the Bridge is incredible, but I wouldn't miss driving to the floor of the canyon.

What part of my itenenrary sounds ambitous? How about 3 nights in Fayetteville, 1 night in Cass or Snowshoe, and 4 nights in Cannan Valley Area? Well, that is 1 day past a week, but I can do that, since the drive home from Cannan Valley isn't too long. What do you think? I plan to do the New River Gorge first and then work my way north to Cannan Valley. I could probably skip Nelson Rocks since I am doing Seneca Rocks. And maybe Cranberry Bogs and maybe the Falls of Hill Creek. The New River Gorge things don't seem that much to me for 3 nights.

If it seems too much, which things could I drop? And how should I split my week up between the 2 places?
Here's a condensed version:
Cannan Valley/Seneca Rocks:
Spruce Knob Tower
Smoke Hole Canyon
Hike to the top of Seneca Rocks
Driving around and hiking ( a short hike, which one is good) Dolly Sods/Bear Rocks
Blackwater Falls and the gorge overlook and maybe a little hiking
Along the way to Cannan Valley from Fayetteville:
Cranberry Bogs
Highland Scenic Byway
Maybe Beartown SP
Along the way to WV:
Coopers Rock Overlook (I live in maryland and will be coming in on I-68, so this is along the way)
New River Gorge Area:
New River Gorge (the bridge, some hiking, sandstone falls, and seeing the other major areas of the Gorge like Grandview, and driving into the gorge)
Babcock State Park (see the Glade Creek Gristmill)
Hawks Nest State Park (maybe take the jetboat ride)
