Hi,

I currently live on Oahu, but my mother who lives in California will be visiting soon. Any suggestions regarding places to take her to or things to do? She hasn't been to Oahu for over 20 years. She's 84, she can walk around but gets tired easily.

I'm also looking for restaurants, she's not a picky eater, but mainly enjoys Japanese food. The restaurants do not have to fine dining, casual / family type of restaurant suggestions would also be appreciated.

Where in Oahu do you live? I like to go to Gyotaku for family dining, which has a wide variety of items to choose from. For really authentic Japanese food, you might try Shokudo (on Kapiolani Boulevard).

Thanks so much for your suggestions! I had forgotten about Gyotaku, I live in Waipio so we'll probably go to the Pearl City restaurant.

I've never been to Shokudo, I looked up their website. Sounds good. Is it in the same building as Pietro's?

My husband and I don't go to Japanese restaurants too often, we're more Italian and Eurasian type of food eaters so I don't really know where all the good Japanese restaurants are.

Your mother seems to be in the same shape as my mother was when she visited Oahu. She could walk, but only short distances. So we rented a wheelchair for a week & she was able to see most everything.

She would like:
Polynesian Cultural Center. To avoid too much walking, stick with canoe pageant, Tonga & Samoa villages, IMAX, canoe ride, 'Horizons' & maybe Ali'i Luau.

Ooooh, Waipio! OK out that side, I've gone to some in the Aiea/Pearlridge area. There's Tadashi's in the Pearl Kai complex, which was very good. I always go to Sakura in the Aiea Town Center (near the post office) for a yummy plate lunch.

I don't know Waipio itself very well but I understand Mililani has quite a few good places.

And as Dusty says, Makino Chaya is a good choice. They're aiming to open at Aloha Tower Marketplace on December 15, but they're still heavily into construction! So we'll see.

Also--yes, Shokudo is in the same building as Pietro's. I like going for lunch because it's not as crowded. Like a sunday lunch.

A tour that might be interesting because it is gorgeous, interesting & there is not too much walking involved is the Doris Duke Shangri La estate. It begins at the Honolulu Academy of the Arts and takes you out in two vans to the estate near Diamond Head.

Hello elisa.

She might enjoy a simple drive around the island. Wouldn't even need to get out of the car, but she could still see quite a bit.

If you like, you could also stop at the many scenic points around the island. She'd just need to walk a few feet at most to take in the view, take a few pictures, and it's back in the car.
