I would get a guidebook for starters. I was in Phoenix a few years ago and went to a botanical gardens. It was really nice.

If you want to get out of the city a daytrip to Sedona is a good outdoor destination, also make sure & visit the Heard - http://heard.org/

I believe you'll find this online guide useful. The corresponding one for LA, where I live, is quite accurate.

If active and in decent physical shape, I'd suggest an early morning hike at Camelback Mtn, Piestewa Peak or South Mtn Park (depending on where you are staying). If you've never been to the Southwest, visit the Desert Botanical Garden (see first comment above) for great examples of cacti and Southwest flora...definitely worth 2-3 hours of exploring, and, again, a good morning activity in June. Visit either old town Scottsdale or Tempe, or both, for fun restaurants, pubs, etc. Go to a D-Backs baseball game (cool ballpark and fun bar/restaurant scene nearby). Sedona is definitely worth a day trip (about 2 hours north with incredible scenery). The Heard Museum, Arizona Science Center and the new music museum are all very impressive, also. Four days isn't enough, sorry.

Actually, I got that wrong. We're not staying in Phoenix (which I originally thought). The wife has us going to a Spa Resort in Peoria. We own timeshare through Bluegreen (http://bluegreenrentals.com/) and decided to do Arizona. My wife can do all the spa stuff, I'm going venturing.

Thanks for the hiking and botanical garden suggestion! i'm also a would be photographer so i'll bring my camera along

Peoria is basically still Phoenix. Its all in the Valley of the Sun - it might be quite hot for you so if you need a break - Sedona is probably the quickest place from Peoria. Peoria is on the west and probably northern side of Phoenix, so Sedona is about 2 hours away by car. Golf? By June the heat is begining to drive the snow birds away so you might be able to get some early morning rounds in at the course of your choice. Most of the places mentioned by Bob above are to your east - but well worth visiting. Have fun...
