My husband and I (65) would like to take about 5 days including a weekend to go somewhere in southern US other than Florida at the end of January. I realize there are not too many places that are not either snowy or really cold in the US at this time. We don't like sitting all day on beaches, snorkling or horseback riding but like seeing the sites and interesting places in the area, shopping & nature. We are from Canada so January is an escape for us. Would love Utah but told it is too cold in January.

New Orleans is great for a 5-day getaway in the winter. It isn't *super* warm (although occasionally it can be shorts weather in Jan), but it will probably seem pretty warm to you if you're from Canada.

I can't say that we'll have great weather here in San Diego, but we won't have snow and often Jan is pretty nice around here. Although, it can be cold and raining for a few days.

When temps drop the San Diego zoo is more fun as the animals are active.

The desert is nice in January.

It may rain, and any San Diegan you run into will be happy about that.

We (Europeans) have spent several winters in the Southern US. Here is our personal ranking:

1. Very best climate & beautiful desert landscape & much to do and to see: Tucson (expect bright sunshine and day temps around 20/21°C).

2. Also beautiful climate & scenery: Death Valley (for shopping, drive to Las Vegas)

3. Nice climate but with rainy & stormy spells: San Diego. Dryer climate: Anza Borrego, Joshua Tree

4. Cooler climate, but fascinating cities: New Orleans and Savannah

5. Warmest climate, but not so scenic: Southern Florida (Everglades are interesting, but just for one day.)

This winter, we will be trying San Antonio, Texas.
