Arizona, San Francisco, or New Orleans in February?

We have a week, a week or two from now. Where should we go? We've been to all 3 places; we've been buried under New England snow since Christmas.

Where should we go??

New Orleans would be my last pick. I do like the River Road Plantation Homes about an hour away.

If you want sunshine and some warmth, Arizona is the only choice.

San Francisco will be cool, maybe rainy, but a great city.

It may depend on what you want to do activity wise; how much you want to spend and availability.

I agree with DebitNM, the Sonoran desert area of Arizona is your best bet. Keep in mind that this extends as far east as Palm Springs CA, a traditional winter escape for easterners. Don't go to northern Arizona. It's great, but cold and snowy. Ski country.

San Francisco may also be warm and sunny compared to
your snow buried New England-you cannot 100% state
that it will be cool and rainy.
It's predicted to rain the weekend of the 11th.
Then it could go back to low 60's possible a day
or two of 70 the remainder of the month.

If you get out of The City, say up to Sonoma County you'll
be warmer yet.

I've lived in the area for over 20 years and have spent
many a birthday at the end of Feb. hiking outside on a
sunny day. Why the last 3 weeks this past January
were high 50's-low 60's and almost no rain.

Phoenix will likely be in the mid-upper 60's-to lower 70's
and toss in an occasional 80. Tucson will always be
at least 5 degrees cooler.
Of the two, I'd vote for Tucson since I'm a biased native.

All three will seem warm and wonderful compared to what you've faced in the NE. Today in SF it was 62F and its supposed to be 70 on Sunday. It has been cold in NO if you consider 45F cold. But should be in the low 60's next week. Phoenix should be high 60's low 70's next week.

Mostly depends on what sort of things you want to do. I'd personally choose SF because there is sooooo much to see/do no matter the weather.

Don't get me wrong, I would be in SF in a heartbeat, cold- rain - sunny - you know me. But lets be honest, the weather does vary a lot at this time of year. And yes, there's no snow and it is warmer than back east.

So I guess it depends on what OP is looking for -- warmER or WARM.

Hi everyone. Thanks for your input. We need warm and some sun. I didn't consider going to Napa or Sonoma; I assumed it would be cold there still. No?

We're sightsee-ers. I don't want to ski or hike this time; we do a lot of that on the East coast. We love good wine, food, pretty places. I usually plan a city visit during the winter but can't bring myself to schlep through the slush of a city for more than a weekend this winter.

What say you about San Diego?

We live in Arizona and you'll find the best odds of sun and relative warmth there in Feb, but we were at Napa (Yountville) about 10 days ago (dinner at French Laundry, yeah!) and it was as warm as Phoenix, probably 60's in the day and 40's at night ... unusual for them (ie, not as likely as in Az) but it was wonderful, with the mustard plants blooming between the rows in the vineyards like wildflowers, and no crowds anywhere on weekdays.

If you can wait until a week or so before booking air etc then I'd check the 10 day weather forecasts and if northern California looks warm and sunny I'd go there, and if not, then I'd pick Arizona (though it was below freezing here two nights this week, which is unusual).

The PGA tournament in Phoenix this week has been delayed each day due to the course being frozen in the morning and some players are wearing two gloves (on the same hand) just to feel their fingers. This weekend it is 70+F in Napa. So THIS weekend Napa/SF would win hands down.

BUT by the time you travel it could be 75 in Phoenix and 50 and raining in Napa. If weather is the most important factor --you need to wait for at least a 7-day forecast before booking. There are no guarantees.

Thanks, everyone. The weather everywhere has been just awful this winter, hasn't it?

Any opinions on San Diego? I haven't been there in years.

(Napa, S.F. and Sonoma are on my list of favorite places, btw.)

San Diego as in sunny and in the seventies San Diego?
Yep, that would be a good choice.

Actually the weather in N.Cal has been fairly nice since New Year's--long stretches without rain and sunny days.

In fact too good. We were ahead of the rainfall averages but now we need the rain more than we need the nice weather

I don't wish a drought on anyone, that's for sure. I can pretty much guarantee that the weather will turn for the worse as soon as we arrive. Murphy's Law.

San Diego is a good destination within the LA/SD megapolitancomplex. I suggest 3 days there and 4 days in the LA portion.

Things to do in LA. http://adventure.howstuffworks.com/l...city-guide.htm

Things to do in SD. http://adventure.howstuffworks.com/s...city-guide.htm

For weather forecasts, I use www.accuweather.com. You can get a 15 day forecast there. It gets more accurate as the time gets closer. Bring an umbrella anyway.

As janis says, we will be awaiting the rain forecast for around the middle of the month with great hope that it will materialize.
