trip choice: savannah or san antonio?

I have a choice of travelling
to either: Savannah - first week of March,2006 or San Antonio - first week of February,2006. Since I've never been to either, perhaps you seasoned travellers can help me decide, based on the weather, things to do, and other considerations. I could also choose San Diego in late April, but I've already been to that great destination!

I live 1.5 hours from San Antonio, and personally can't imagine spending a week there. To me, it is worth two days time tops. February could be quite cold in SA as well. The Texas Hill country would be a better choice if you're headed this way and want pretty scenery. Austin, a better choice if you want city-life. But this sounds like maybe you're using a time share, so your choices might be limited. Just my two cents.

I, too would go to Savannah, but if you have an entire week, you may want to split your time between Savannah and Charleston, South Carolina. Savannah is nice, Charleston is georgous.

Having spent time in both I would probably opt for Savannah that time of year. Things may be starting to bloom and the weather will not be hot and humid. As one of the other post-ers mentioned you could see Charleston but also Beaufort(SC) or head the other direction and go down to St. Mary's/Cumberland Is.

A week is a long time for either city, but I'd definitely choose Savannah the beginning of March over San Antonio the beginning of February...simply for the weather.

I live in San Antonio now, but was here in February house hunting. Weather this year was unusual I hear, but it was cold and damp and dreary this February, anyway.

I used to live in Savannah, and you've a far better chance for decent weather the first of March. It will be too early for azaleas and dogwood, but there will be some annuals blooming in the squares and normally the weather then is pleasant.

Actually, I only have 4 days, but so far, it sounds like Savannah is the preferred choice. How far is Charleston from Savannah, as I'd prefer a side trip no more than a few hours away?

Your drive from Savannah to Charleston will take around 1.5-1.75 hrs unless you take the coast roads and then it will easily take 1.75-2 hrs.

If you like flowers, the first week in March could be great for both Charleston and Savannah!! If we have a mild winter, the azaleas will be starting to bloom. The Camellias will still be bloom. It can be a fantasy land. A trip to Charleston should include stopping by Magnolia Plantation,

and Middleton Place

Check out places and things to do in Savannah.

Hi Mrace,

I have never been to San Antonio, but my husband and I loved (loved) Savannah.

Down by the waterfront, walking through the historical district. The food was great.

We did a day trip to Savannah from Hilton Head on a whim and were so glad that we did.

Enjoy, Tiff

Savannah might get the nod, but definitely go to Charleston for a couple of days (not just one). More to do and better food in charleston.

Thanks all, Savannah with a side trip to Charleston sounds good. I also eliminated the following two options as being "too hot" temperature wise:

San Antonio: 09/25/05-09/28/05

Austin,Tx: 10/07/05-10/09/05

Do you guys agree?

Texas weather is actually pretty nice in late September, early October. I personally wouldn't hesitate to spend those dates in those cities.

I would vote for Savannah. You may want to read thru previous GA & SC POSTS but the Savannah vs. Charleston opinions are endless.I (personally) would suggest that Charleston is too far and and similar to Savannah to waste time with. With only 4 days, consider a day trip to Hilton Head, Beaufort, Parris Island or islands surrounding Savannah. The drive to Charleston is boring and unnecessary to get a feel for the beautiful south.

Sorry, forgot. Savannah can be cool in early March and in case your dates slip, remember that Savannah is the St. Patrick's Day capital of the South. It gets very crowded.

Agree with Savannah for the late winter timeframe, but late September in SA is usually a really nice time weatherwise.

Statia is VERY correct that early fall is generally beautiful weather in Texas! It might be a little too cool to swim outdoors, but if you're going to be out sightseeing, the weather will be great. Highs that time of year are generally in the mid 70's.

If you're going to be in the Hill Country, check to see if there are any festivals going on in Fredericksburg! The Gillespie County Fair is that time of year and it is FUN! Horse racing, German food and music, etc.

Ok then, let's take a final vote on:

Savannah: 03/08/06-03/12/06

vs.

San Antonio: 09/25/05-09/28/05

ps - Sorry, to drive you guys crazy!

Go to Savannah - and also visit Tybee Island which is close by. As others have said, you can also drive to Hilton Head, Beaufort, and even Charleston if you have time. Be sure to eat at The Lady and Sons - this is the restaurant of Paula Deen and her sons. . as seen on the Food Network. Be prepared to wait for a table; however, they give you a pager that works for several blocks so you can sightsee while you wait. Fantastic southern food, especially the baked chicken pie!!
Savannah in March should be perfect as far as the weather and temperature.

I've spent exactly one day in each town on seperate road trips. I felt like I really saw San Antonio for the most part. However, I would love to go back to Savannah I felt jipped leaving.
