Trip Advise

Hello,
Our family (2 Adults, 2 kids 9&11) is travelling in a few weeks to DC.. We are lucky enough to have been selected to have breakfast with our Senator at 8:30 with a tour of Congress afterward. Then at 12:30 we have been put on a White House tour. What can we take into the White House tour? Will we have time to go back to our hotel in the Dupont Cirlce area in between tours to drop off the camera etc.? Also, is worth buying the metro passes for the week?We are flying into National and staying for 6 days. One last question, is the Spy Musuem a must for the kids? Any advise to these questions would be appreciated.
Happy Travels....

In my opinion, the Spy Museum is not a "must" for kids that age. There is a lot of historical "cold War" era stuff and not as much interactive and "how did they do that" information as I would have liked to see.

My husband and 17 year old son loved it, my 13 year old dtr and I were less enthusiastic.

Here's the official list of items prohibited in the White House:

You should have time to go to your hotel before the WH tour. I strongly sugggest a taxi from the Capitol to your hotel for the drop off and another taxi to the White House. The taxi cost for 4 people is close to the cost of 4 metro fares and this will be much quicker - especially as you'll need to change trains.

I WOULD get and use Metro passes for the remainder of your visit. Get four 7-day SHORT TRIP passes (you don't need the more comprehensive/expensive 7-day Fast Passes - which are better for commuters and trips into the suburbs).

I think the Spy Museum depends on your interests. We took our then around 9 and 12 year old boys, and we all really liked it and found it interesting.

It isn't so much an issue of what you "must" see, but rather what you "want" to see and do. That said, we would recommend the Spy Museum, but not everyone would.

Have a great trip!
