treat trip to florida - where to go?

Hi - we are taking the family on holiday as a treat when hubby retires.
We are in our late 50s, and fit. The rest of the party will be son,27 and his wife; other son, 24 and our neice also 24.
So far, we are spending a week in Orlando (for the parks) then a weeks cruise, which finishes on the Sunday. We fly home from Orlando on the Friday - question is, what to do for those intervening days. Needs to interest us all - not easy!
We had thought of Daytona for the driving experience and beach, with maybe the last couple of days in St Augustine. Unfortunately, the drive thing isn't available at that time, which was the main thing of interest especially for the youngsters. Is there anything else there for them?
Alternatively, maybe Ft Lauderdale? Could we do a day visit to the Everglades from there? Is there much there for them? Or does anyone have any other ideas? Is there somewhere else that could provide a variety of things to do that will interest them?
All help gratefully received!!

The Everglades are very interesting and the National Park Service has several VC's in them. The one at Shark Valley is probably less than an hour from Ft. Lauderdale and does tram rides into them.

Does your cruise end in Port Canaveral or elsewhere?

Yes, cruise ends in Port Canaveral.
Sorry to be dim, but what's a VC?

Congratulations, hubby, on your upcoming retirement.

St. Augustine would be a good choice and easily reached from either Orlando or Port Canaveral. I also think the mid-20 year olds would enjoy it too. Here are a few web sites to get you thinking:

http://www.staugustine.com/visit/
http://www.visitflorida.com/St_Augustine
http://www.getaway4florida.com

My second choice would be to visit the Everglades.

I took a trip that saw several places in Florida not that long ago. Go to my profile page:

www.fodors.com/community/profile/bachslunch/

and look at the six trip reports I did (six of the first seven cited there) for ideas.

looked at Key West, but reckon its too far for a few days - flying back out of Orlando on the Friday. It would take a day to get there and a day to get back - not worth it if you only have 4-5 days. Thanks for the links - reading them at the moment!

Key West is worth it even for that amount of traveling and time there. It is totally unlike any place in Florida. Most of the rest of the state holds no interest for me, but I can go back again and again to Key West.

muggy, enjoy your post-retirement family trip! I've been retired 20 years which has resulted in much traveling and learning. I could recommend Road Scholar programs, once called Elderhostel...check their on line listings. We did two last winter in Florida. Coming up is a family gathering at Thanksgiving at Key West (daughter living near Melbourne). We are renting a house. So glad to hear raves. Otherwise, I'd recommend St. Augustine and Sarasota and touring the Kennedy Space Center...of course some head for Disney World.

You can ride an airboat if you go to the Everglades. Take a look at those sites.

You can check out those places below see what you may want to do and see in Miami.
