MapQuest says stay on I-26 all the way to I-95 in South Carolina. You will not save any time by using the toll road.
The times that I drove on I-95 and I-26 as far as Columbia, I had no problems.
Plan on 22 hours with the 11 hour point near Spartanburg SC.

Tom, I95 isn't anywhere near I26 in columbia. he takes I75 south from Detroit, which is what my family in Ohio does going to Florida, I can't see any reason for heading to I26 in particular, unless he has come across Ohio to I77.
