traveling solo to hawaii
Hi, I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice about where to stay/travel to in hawaii. I am 32 and will be traveling by myself. I am interested in going to an area of hawaii that will be safe for a female traveling alone as well as provide enough activity for someone my age..
Thanks....
Thanks....

I'm a bit older than you, but I have traveled solo to Hawaii for one week in August of 2003. I had a great time by myself!
I traveled to Oahu and stayed on Waikiki at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, Ali'i Tower. I rode public transportation all around Oahu, stopping to see the sights I wanted to see, shop when and where I wanted to shop. Dine when and where I wanted to dine.
The Hilton is a resort, so it is complete with restaurants so it was not necessary to venture very far away at night. I had my "big" meal during the daytime.
I made two day-trips (tours) to the islands of Maui and Kauai and enjoyed both tours. The guides were very knowledgeable and I would not have ventured alone to these two outer islands, I don't think.
Hope this helps.

i soloed a couple of years ago. no problem. i used vrbo to find condos and also stay at a hotel on kauai, did kauai, maui and the big island. had no problems except in honolulu where my luggaage was stolen at the uss arizona monument. do a little web surfing and you'll find lots of good places to stay.

I travel to Hawaii (both Honolulu as well a number of fairly remote places on other islands) for business, so I am always alone. I've never felt unsafe and can't think of anyplace where I would. I've stayed in resorts, hotels and rented VRBO, and the last, I think, is best for the solo traveler. While I've traveled solo in a number of places in the world and rarely felt uncomfortable, I have felt out of place staying at Hawaiian resorts. They attract couples and families (depending on which you go to), and I always felt a bit odd alone.
So-do some reading (there are a million back thread here) and pick the island that best suits you. They ALL have lots to do and are all safe-it just depends on your interests (city life? shopping? whale watching? volcano watching? etc).

I think you'd be hard pressed to find yourself in an unsafe situation in Hawaii, but I find some places much more friendly and fun to be solo than others. I love Waikiki/Honolulu myself, you don't need a rental car but can get around fine on the Bus and walking. There's tons to see and do.
I would also consider Lahaina on Maui. Again you can get to town by shuttle from the airport. The town is 'touristy' but I like the fact that you can walk to everything, again lots to see and do, and would not be out of place on your own.
I think alot of the decision depends on it you want to get a rental car or not.

Traveling alone is Hawaii is safe. I live on the Big Island and am single female. You might consider a B&B to stay, as the propritors are very friendly and will give you some company to share your adventures with. I own a company called Dolphin Journeys, if you want to come swim with the dolphins. We take good care of people and are happy to guide you to good restuants and have a list of accommodation suggestions you will only find by word of mouth. Aloha, Captain Dolphin
