Wanting some time to myself and have pulenty of Skymiles to burn. Which island would you recommend for a female alone? I want beautiful scenery, peacefulness, a fairly easy time navigating around....

Are you planning to rent a car or hope to get around on public transportation?

Open to suggestions....whichever is best.

I like Oahu the best.

I asked because without a car I think Oahu is by far the easiest. I love Waikiki/Honolulu but I wouldn't call it peaceful. But it is a great place solo because there's so much to see and do and you don't need a rental car.

My own second choice would be on Maui around the Lahaina area. Again because for myself traveling solo I'm not looking for isolation rather appreciate having lots of options of things to do besides sit by myself on a beach somewhere (not that there's anything wrong with that!).

For example, I think most people would consider Kauai a very peaceful island with beautiful scenery but it's not one I'd choose for a solo trip myself.

Are you looking for a retreat where you can just hang out on the beach or the mountains and leave the problems of the mainland behind ? If that is so then I suggest you consider Hana (on Maui), Waimea (Kauai), and the northshore of Kauai (except Princeville). You might also want to look at the Big Island. There is lots of places on the Big Island where you can get away - perhaps stay on a coffee farm or near the volcano ?

We have visited Maui, Kauai and Oahu as a family over the years - I did a solo trip to Oahu (many years ago when single) and thought it was a good location for me and my interests. I rented a car for only one day and drove the island, visited other sites by group transportation or hotel helped arrange. If you really want solitude, I would think more of one of the others- but you've been given some great web sites here to look over. I think females traveling alone are as safe on any of the islands as they are anywhere traveling solo - if you are as mindful as you would be anywhere when alone. Wherever you go, and if you are ever also interested in socializing with others aside from a bar/restaurant scene, one thing I did during my solo travel days as a "female alone" (and I went to several while in Oahu), was to get the info on any museums/private art galleries for new exhibition opening nights - many of them are free or small fee (obviously not the grand gala type openings) and often run from 5-7 or 7-9 and offer hors d'oeuvres, cocktails, etc and offer easy opening casual conversations with others based on the exhibit/installation/artist/etc - sometimes I would meet a few other singles or groups and was invited to join them for post reception at local restaurant or bar which was nice. Something different aside from the group luau's (spelling may be wrong, sorry) or other tours. Otherwise, if you are looking for peaceful spots on any of the island, just double check with the hotel personnel for safety first. especially if planning on swimming alone at unknown beaches which can gave unusual tides/currents. HAVE FUN.
