I took a cab a few months ago, from Newark to midtown.
$80 before tip. I will never make that mistake again!

Car service is the way to go.

I paid $90 for a cab ride to de Gaulle once. There was a Metro strike and I really needed to get home. Cabbies/car services, whatever you call them can be major bastards though.

>>but at any given time, any car service can, and may, charge for tolls for the trip back to NY even if the trip originates in NY where there is no toll. Their argument is that they have to return back to the city to do their next run<<

Sadly, that's a cheesy driver who's looking to pocket a few extra dollars, especially from out-of-towners who wouldn't know better.

Back to my original suggestion, the third post of this thread, I see. Oy. We always use a Town Car whenever we arrive at an airport unless we rent a car or a cab will do. When you're traveling with a group a car service is the logical choice.

"Sadly" I agree that the practice is obnoxious, but this has been presented to me, frequent traveler and long time New Yorker several times. Not by the drivers, mind you, but by the dispatchers from several of the recommended car services listed here.

This a a "buyer beware" situation, so I wanted people to be aware.

You can always just pay the demanded--but unnecessay--toll, and just forgo the tip.
