tammy,

DON'T do the AirTrain. If you MUST save money, take the bus--much more convenient. But I agree--get a car service.

I pictured much bigger bags. Some people pull around some huge ones (with luggage tags) in the subway. I don't think you'll need an suv. A regular towncar should do.

I'm baack! lol... so I was checkin out some of the njtransit buses and they are cheaper indeed. However I was wondering how hard it is to get our 4 bags in the bus.. We have to transfer once too... i'm still thinkin the car service (mini van) is the best idea... anyone done the bus thing?

If it's the bus service to Penn Station/Port Authority, your luggage is not a problem. The driver will put them in the storage area underneath the seats and there's lots of space.

I don't think you mean an actual NJ Transit bus because I can't think of any that you'd take from EWR to NYC.

nstevey, that's the bus I referred to earlier that is $15 per person. Not worth the savings ($20 over a car service) if you ask me.

sf7307 - I totally agree with you. Car service is the way to go. Just putting the bus info out there to see.

Car service.

Schlepping any bags for any distance will suck the life out of you.

No way I'd do AirTrain with any luggage other than carry on and if you do the olympic bus, you still have to get from Port Authority to your hotel.

Look at it this way, how much is the bus for four people? $12 each and the car service is $60? No brainer.

BTW, don't tell the car service you have a lot of luggage as they will upgrade you. Tell them all carry on.

Those Lincoln Town Cars have mad trunk space.

Another vote for car service. Pick-up at airport outside terminal/drop-off at your hotel. No need to be using stairs, dragging suitcases around if using AirTrain, bus or other transport once in the City.

The Toll is on entering NY only, not in the reverse if you choose this route for your return to airport (if EWR).

When you tip, this is on the cost of the car/limo, not including the toll. So 15% on the vehicle only.

alright so if I'm going with the car service.. which one is the best? So far I've got dial7.com and they offer a minivan for 60 bucks for the four of us. Any suggestions?

Well, earlier on this board there was a recommendation for www.carmellimo.com. There have been positive posts on this board for both Carmel and dial7. Check their websites for possible discounts.

I've never had a problem with Carmel. You make a reservation and when you have your bags at the airport, you call them and the next car stops to pick you up. They pretty much have a continuous flow of town cars coming and going from the airport and the wait is usually about 5 minutes at the most for the next one to reach your terminal. If you want a hotel pick-up that's a bit different. At times, that can be faster than a taxi if there's a long line for taxis.

The point being - with Carmel you don't have to wait because there's a car always nearby. Vs the service I use at home where a specific car and driver is assigned to you and your pickup.

sandi,
"The Toll is on entering NY only, not in the reverse if you choose this route for your return to airport (if EWR)."

Technically you are correct, but at any given time, any car service can, and may, charge for tolls for the trip back to NY even if the trip originates in NY where there is no toll.
Their argument is that they have to return back to the city to do their next run (though in most cases they actually do pick up another fare at the airport, and would basically be paid twice for the same toll)

As long as they tell you "plus tolls" they can probably charge you for it, so always check.

nyer, I wonder, because I would certainly interpret "plus tolls" to mean tolls we actually have to pay while I'm in the car!!

They can say that it's up to you to ask exactly what tolls. Don't know if it's legal, but it's certainly done.

I'm going to dissent about Carmel Limo.

I used them without problem for years. Then over the last several years I had problems with getting through when I landed, no show pickups, and sending multiple cars to a pickup.

With Dial 7 (212-777-7777) I haven't had one problem in the last 8 or so trips.

Either way, good luck and save your sanity and go with a car service.

Carmel and the seven 7s are the two most popular. I don't think you'd go wrong with either one. 7 does advertise alot on the TV (TAXI!!!!!), so I tend to *not* go use them - my own weird little psychology.

Actually, I tend to go with the one I have coupon for - if you have any friends in the city who get those annoying flyers, ask them to send you the coupon, usually $5 off, but there are restrictions, so read the fine print.

Car service or cab will be $60, not $80. Four can fit into a cab or a regular car, you can always wait for a minivan taxi or call for an SUV if you want a larger vehicle. You do not need a limo.

Carmel. 212.666.6666 or Delancey provide fine service, 212.228.3301. You also won't have to wait on line for a cab if you call car service.
