travel time/stopping point?
mapquest says it is 430 miles from Phila area to Freport and 6.5 hours. Since I assume we can't drive 70 miles an hour the whole time how is this possible? Besides Boston is there somewhere halfway to stop for an overnigher? Thanks

Ooops, pressed wrong key.
I don't see how you can make that trip in 6 1/2 hours....without being a candidate for a speeding ticket. And, believe me, that route is patroled!
The halfway point is well before Boston. Rather it's closer to the area between Hartford and the Sturbridge, MA (the entrance to the Mass Pike). There are some decent hotels/motels in the Sturbridge area.

You can't make Freeport from Phili in 6.5 hours. Expect more like 8+ hours. Sturbridge is about 3 hours south of Freeport as is Boston. Sturbridge is off rte 90 and Boston is off 95. Traffic on both routes is something to concider with 95 through Boston my route of choice. Hartford is more like 4, 41/2 south of Freeport.

According to MS Street/Trips, it's 423 miles and 6 hours 37 mintes. I would have thought it was a bit longer, but I've found this program to be very reliable.
If we're taking a road trip longer that one day's driving, we like to stay over about 2/3 - 3/4 the way there, so as to have have so far to go the second day. Same driving home.
If there are two of you to share the driving, I'd recommend doing this in one day.
According to Streets, halfway would put you in Hartford.

the best i've done this is in about 7.5 hours without hitting rush hours, conn. still has a 55 limit on its roads that at least i have used. it is patrolled. but i really can't see this as a two day trip to get there. if you start just after rush hour ie hit the jersey tp at about 9:30am (assuming you are using rt 95 as your initial part of the trip) avoid going thru nyc and just using 95 the whole way, think of taking njtp to gardenstate pky to ny thruway exit for tappanzee brdg( entire route to maine is 87/ 287 to 684 to 84 tp 91n) . either route tho, you can be there by supper time. if you do want to make a two day ride head to sturbridge mass (the tappanzee brdg route noted above) the first day then take mass tp back to 95 and head on up to freeport. search sturbridge for things to see with any free time you have.
