travel photography trip
I am a professional photographer. I shoot mostly travel and interiors for magazines. I had a shoot cancel, but I am still flying into Indianapolis this wednesday, and need to find something to shoot there, or Cleveland, Columbus, or Cinncinnati. Any ideas? Irealize this is totally wide open, but I'm just looking for an interesting place or person. something I could use for a promotional piece, showing my ability to tell a story with images.
Thanks for your opinions...

Greg,
I've never been there myself, but I've always heard Columbus has a lot of interesting architecture--Columbus, Indiana, that is. A lot of world-famous architects have designed buildings in this relatively small town.
Check it out at:

The next time I'm in the Midwest, I'm heading for Columbus, IN!

Greg if you are a real photographer you should know that anywhere you go there are many oportunities. Just look around you when you get there. You will see people different ages, buildings, trees, sky, streets, old barns if you willing to take a drive to the country. I can go on and on. You need to keep your eyes open, have a passion for what you are doing and you will see what I mean.

Greg, recognizing that what ZZZZZ has said has some merit, you can save yourself grief by skipping Columbus, Ohio, on this trip ... in that it possesses none of those features - per my aunt who lives there when not in FL trying to avoid Ohio's blizzard-like winters. She lives in a trailer, and if you know anything about the winds, rain and snow being endured there, that's pretty much akind to chasing tornandos in a Winnebago. Ciao.

Know that this is late however ....
L... you need to check out more of Ohio than your aunts trailor court..(which I think there are only 2 in the cols area & would be interesting to photograph with the people that live there in themselves...different for sure!)
Columbus has much culture & some interesting places, with places for pretty picture shots..The old Ohio theater has been restored & is beautiful as well as the happenings there-ballet,symphony, opera...., the carnigee library downtown-lots of marble & wonderful in the old section, the cols museum of art-outstanding-as well as behind it, the columbus college of art & design has interesting things, the Santa Maria On the river front is interesting for photos,The columbus zoo& wyndott lake, the expanding airport,COSI,German village, short north galleries, easton town center ,Ohio State university campus& horseshoe stadium,(lots of colleges in the area..(Ohio Dominican,Otterbine,Cols state,CCAD,..)old worthington where there was once a stagecoach stop at the inn-& ALL the lovely shops,& old trains,The Topiary People etc. in the park downtown behind the library, the old armory now cultural art center,The Nationwide area with the blue jacket stadium, the UNusual convention center, the developing riverwalk area in gahanna, the thurber home,(check out the attic for the story
) The James, the river frontS,OSU airport,Lane avaition ,the flight museum, old arlington homes, the capitol building & city hall ,rko palace.....just some off the top of my head things ...

For what it's worth (and assuming that this is a legit question), the state of Ohio funded the painting of a number of barns throughout the state. Some of them look very impressive -- bright red barns, sitting in fields of green. others are different colors. personally, I'd get out of the cities and head out into the farmland. Afterall, you will be in the Heartland of America.

I agree with x and "L' you should no better than to judge a place you have never been! In addition to x's suggestions, there is the Palace Theater, The Ohio State House, which recently underwent major renovation, the Kelton House, Thurber House. Take a stroll in either Victorian or German Villages or the Short North. Columbus has beautiful metro parks including the Whetstone Park of Roses. If you want to get out of town go to the Hocking Hills area, south of Columbus and visit Old Mans Cave.
Incidentally-Fodors voted Columbus one of the best kept travel secrets. If you don't believe me go to their home page and do a search on Columbus.

"L" If Columbus is so backward and full of trailer parks, why did prestigious Nordstroms pick Columbus to open up their only Ohio store and bypass the surrounding states? Why are million dollar condos downtown selling like hotcakes?? Why did the NHL grant Columbus a franchise?? Why did the Columbus Symphony Orchestra play in Carneige Hall???
Normally, I find your posts amusing "L" but this time your snobbish is showing! There is life and culture outside of the beltway L.
Besides the above mentioned, Columbus is host to Jack Nicklaus Memorial Gold Tournament every year, world class ballet, more restaurants per captia than any city in the US, major test market for new products, world class Art Museum. Columbus is one of the fastet growing cities in the US. You get the picture L?? Incidentally, trailer parks here are a rarity, while 1/2 to million dollar homes are the norm.

I may be blessed, or possibly blasted, but my Columbus perspective is strictly though my aunt's trailor window ... and if my view on Columbus is perhaps less than robust, possibly the real issue is my aunt's negatiuve view of the world. Look, if her A/C goes on the firtz, it just so happens C gets the big heat wave. Leak in the roof, and wow, torrential rains like you've never seen, Leone. Snow ... couldn't even get the small snow plow in. Whole court is buried. Cold ... just the opportinuty for her small, oil burner to go out. And high winds and tornado warnings, and you know how to sing the trailor court blues when one of those babies is spawned on the leading esge of a cold front and comes whistling through. Ever try to tie down a trailor. Not a good time to practice the olde bowline ... lets see, the rabbit comes up through what hole ... I don't see any damned hole. Okay, if that's not enough, why is it the people I meet from C I meet here in DC, not C. They seem neat people, thus I naturally assume they had to get out of that envirnoment that appears to be eating my aunt alive. Does that do it for Columbus ... and if so, lets start on St. Louis. Ciao

Well, an update: I just telephoned the trailer court in C, and my aunt tells me it's hot as blue blazes today ... that's the latest from C. I'm trying to feel positive about C. but jeez, all that hot weather ... probably to be followed by thunderstroms ... wow, she's better check her tie-downs right now. Let me get her on the horn. In the meantime, keep snapping thise pix ... C could change any minute now. Ciao. L

L-There are probably 2 trailer courts in all of Columbus and it hardly ever snows a considerable amount here. Rains more than anything else. As for tornados, haven't had one warning this year yet for Columbus. IMO, you are making this whole thing up!
Before you knock Columbus, you need to see it up close and personal and visit the spots mentioned above.

Okay, okay, I'll admit it ... although I did travel to Columbus, I stayed only a week ... but oddly, and quite by happenstance, from what scientists subsequently revealed, something occurred with the time-space continuum that very same week. All I can offer is an imprecise impression ... it felt like a year. Now, Diane, assuming you have Mapquest near your fingers ... suggest you surf on over to 755 Stelzer Road and report back on what you observe. If you don't mind, I'll just leave off the Lot number ... she's not ready for guests. But from what she told me this morning, it's probably going to be another hot one, but her cold has passed and she's having a relatively good day. As for making it up? Well, my thinking is ... if it's not true, it ought to be. Ciao

L-That is one of the WORST areas in Columbus. If there is a trailer park there, which I don't recall ever seeing, your aunt needs to move. That stretch of road is called Uzi Alley. There are plenty of nice places in Columbus. Next time your in town give me a holler and I will show you around.

I wouldn't let my dog live in that area of town L let alone a favorite Aunt. Diane is right, she needs to move. There are plenty of senior housing options available in Columbus. If you really loved your aunt you would get her out of that rat hole.

Well, bc and Diane, very nice of you ... but that's the way it is. I think the game plan is to move once the tax rebate arrives. But seriously, I telephone a lot and she loves me, a lot, or so she says ... and every year I fly her to FL to be with her sister ... and we buy the oil and give the cash ... and people live as they wish. And she has an Escada or two in the closet, from another family member who once weighed less. She refuses to open in pinochle unless she has killer cards, so we partner, and win sometimes. And laugh a lot. Live as they wish. Now that we've settled C., what about St. Louis, where I might just have a relative under that welcoming arch. Ciao
