SBee - That train trip is one of the most beautiful I've ever taken - for as short as it is (The trip to Fairbanks is also amazing). The bus people will say it parallels the bus route for most of the way but I was on the train and I don't remember seeing the road (where a bus would go)in some of the more beautiful parts. But whichever you take you will be stricken by the beauty of the land; the eagles, the flowers, streams, lakes, mountains, trees. Keep your eyes open - look up and around; drink it in. have a wonderful trip!

We're just back from Alaska on the 12th of July and we rode the Alaska Railroad from Anchorage to Portage, Spencer whistle stop, and Whittier, then into the wilderness not seen by car. I can only imagine how beautiful the train would be all the way to Seward. It's a very special experience! I vote train!

The Seward Highway and the Alaska RR only parallels the Arm, less than 1/2 the trip. A bus would be my last choice. There is only 1 train/day leaving Anchorage, around 7am.
The major benefit of this early departure, which some people complain about, is, it gives you a good block of time for activities.
