Train and rental car Anchorage

We've booked the Princess rail transfer from Whittier to Anchorage after our weeklong cruise up from Vancouver (because I've always wanted to ride on one of those dome railcars!) Princess tells me the train only goes to the Anchorage airport. We need to rent a car for the two weeks of our land Alaska vacation, and I noticed that Avis has a downtown location that would avoid the 10% airport tax. Anyone done this or have suggestions on how to get from airport to Avis downtown? Thanks!!

Try Alamo before booking with Avis.

Today I checked Travelocity and found a great deal on a minivan from Alamo. Last week there was a great deal thru Hotwire for Avis. Things change..........
Thanks for the tip.

Picking up a car at Whittier will have a $125 drop off fee with Avis- only company. Actually the taxes run about 25% from Anchorage airport. Alamo has excellent web specials- common for $149/week. Which I have gotten several times. My opinion only- the downtown offices will require a cab and more time- most open late and close early- by 6pm. For me it is always more convenient to just rent from the airport. Then no cabs etc required. My recommendation- IF You are going next year- DON'T lock into any car rental that you can't easily cancel- like Hotwire/Priceline etc. Your plans can change several times over.

We just booked a rental car through Hotwire for $168 incl. taxes and fees from the airport. We arrived at night, took a cab to the hotel and then bussed back to the airport the following day for p/u of the vehicle. Hertz reimburses up to $20 for taxi fares to pick up your vehicle (we dated the receipt from the taxi for the day of p/u!).

We used High Country in Anchorage. Their rates were much lower than all the big name places and they are away from the airport. We paid $12 total for a trip to their office from the airport.
