Go to Google Images. Enter ZTL. One of the choices will be ZTL Florence. When you click on it, you will see maps of all the ZTL's in Florence and you will see the standard ZTL signs used all over Italy. Memorize what they look like.

I take issue with the accuracy of the speed cameras as they have been challenged here in the US as a result of their inaccuracy. I also take issue with the amount of the fine, but I paid the bill nonetheless. Insofar as the restricted area is concerned, we did not recognize the restricted signs. if any were there and believe that there should be some leniency in matters such as these for foreign travelers. We were not given a tutorial with our rental car and worked hard to be mindful of our speed in particular, and secondly paying meters and getting tickets for our vehicle while in cities. Didn't expect such harsh responses that assumed us to be elite minded Americans, not wanting to own up to their responsibilities. Thanks for the tip Ackislander.

Learning the rules of the road in that country is the responsibility of the driver. Renters are not children and the rental agencies are not their parents. If one plans to drive in a foreign country the first thing one shuold do is look at a guide book to find out about speicific rules & regs.
As for the amount of any fine - that is up to the gov't - and as long as everyone has to pay the same I don;t see any cause for complaint.
Many people come to NYC from places where you are allowed to turn right on red - try to do so here - and end up with a $200 fine. Sorry - that is their fault - and haven o one to blame but themselves. (And the number that try to turn into a pack of pedestrians and push them out of the way is incredible. I have seen two instances of passengers defending themselves from such cars by hitting it with an umbrella or package - and then the drivers are mad that someone is hitting their car. Wouldn't you think common sense would tell you not to try to drive into a whole group of pedestrians crossing the street?)
